Position Overview: The Senior Legal Counsel will provide expert legal advice and support to an educational institution based in Lagos, ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations while safeguarding the institution’s interests. This role requires a seasoned attorney with a strong understanding of educational law, risk management, and institutional governance.

Position Overview: The Senior Legal Counsel will provide expert legal advice and support to an educational institution based in Lagos, ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations while safeguarding the institution’s interests. This role requires a seasoned attorney with a strong understanding of educational law, risk management, and institutional governance.
Key Responsibilities:
- Legal Advisory:
- Provide strategic legal advice on a range of issues including employment law, student rights, regulatory compliance, and contract negotiations.
- Assist in the interpretation and implementation of policies and procedures to ensure they are legally sound and aligned with best practices.
- Compliance and Risk Management:
- Monitor and ensure compliance with Nigerian federal, state, and local regulations affecting the institution.
- Develop and implement risk management strategies and protocols to mitigate potential legal risks.
- Contract Management:
- Draft, review, and negotiate contracts and agreements, including vendor contracts, service agreements, and partnership arrangements.
- Ensure all contracts protect the institution’s interests and comply with applicable laws.
- Litigation Management:
- Manage and oversee any legal disputes or litigation involving the institution, working with external legal counsel as necessary.
- Provide guidance on settlement negotiations and strategies.
- Policy Development:
- Collaborate with administrators to develop and update institutional policies and procedures.
- Provide training and guidance on legal issues to staff and administrators.
- Governance:
- Advise the institution’s Board of Trustees or equivalent governing body on legal matters and assist in the preparation of board meetings and documentation.
- Ensure governance practices comply with legal and regulatory requirements.
- Education and Training:
- Conduct training sessions for staff and faculty on legal and compliance matters, including harassment prevention, student rights, and data privacy.
- Legal Research and Analysis:
- Stay informed about legal developments and changes in education law that may impact the institution.
- Conduct legal research and provide analysis to support decision-making processes.
- Degree or equivalent law degree from an accredited institution.
- Licensed to practice law in Nigeria with a minimum of 6 years of experience as in a corporate organization .
- Strong knowledge of Nigerian federal and state regulations affecting educational institutions.
- Proven experience in contract negotiation, risk management, and legal compliance.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse group of stakeholders, including administrators, faculty, staff, and legal professionals.
- Demonstrated ability to handle confidential information with discretion and integrity.
- Experience working in an educational environment.
- Previous experience advising a Board of Trustees or similar governance body.
