Business Need / Purpose of Role:



The Area General Manager - Central America & Caribbean is responsible for the ownership and accountability for ensuring a successful area business, aligned to regional and global strategy and policies, that delivers growth, profit, and shareholder value through satisfying customer expectations, attracting and retaining business opportunities, optimization, efficiency, and business effectiveness.


Objectives & Measurement – Key Responsibilities

  • Understand overall market conditions within the area and translate this understanding into an area business growth strategy, aligned to regional strategy, based on service portfolio development, M&A strategy, and new lines of revenue.
  • Own your business: Own the P&L and be accountable for hitting growth, operational, and financial targets.
  • Improve operations efficiency: Identify key areas in your markets to improve productivity, reduce costs, and increase margin.
  • Be data-driven: Take a data-driven approach to problem-solving and market insight development.
  • Responsible for the fiscal planning, budgeting, and strategic planning to evaluate the financial performance of the area.
  • Works with speed and agility focused on the key drivers of the business to ensure long term sustainable growth.
  • Deploys, embeds, and ensures standardized processes that are predictable, reliable, and repeatable across the sphere of influence.
  • Leads cross functional area leadership team.
  • Sets operational goals with key metrics and ensure quick analysis of any variances to ensure a prompt resolution and mitigate impact on our clients or our performance.
  • Delivers predictable top and bottom-line results across the area, with a relentless focus on driving efficiency, flawless execution, and makes difficult decisions.
  • Brings insightful analysis to issues. Uses logic in decision making to determine best solutions for the business.
  • Drives a clear culture of performance management accountability across the business. Sets clear expectations and provides timely and relevant feedback to direct reports (for developing and improving performance) and holds them accountable for doing the same with their teams.
  • Displays rigor around talent management. Ensures appropriate talent is deployed and effective succession planning, development plans, and contingency plans are in place for all key positions.
  • Ensures that employees are equipped with the operational resources they need on an ongoing basis.
  • Provides timely strategic, operational, and reporting information to the Regional CEO and implement decisions in accordance with good governance, with the company' s policies and procedures, and within budget.
  • Serves as the leader of the area leadership team and charged with the creation of area strategies that reflect the needs of the market area and the priorities of Company.
  • Champions change, operational improvement, and growth initiatives - seeks out and employs effective change management and performance improvement techniques and tools.
  • Maintains and develops with the Regional CEO the strategic plans for the area that align with the global strategy and successfully implement such plans.
  • Ensures that the region is at the forefront of leveraging digital technologies to support the business strategy.
  • Ensures that the organization complies in full, with all legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Mobilizes and ensures adequate funding for all business activities of the organization.
  • Makes an effort to understand the needs of critical stakeholders and devises strategies to ensure the needs are met to advance the organization's vision and mission.
  • Develops and adheres to corporate governance best practices.
  • Develops an in-depth and up-to-date understanding of ISS customer needs and requirements within the agency, world of ports and other logistics business.
  • Responsible for the Area Business P&L, implementing local process, governance & procedures, aligned to regional and global policies for sustainable growth and success.
  • Grows the business and wins work in line with corporate strategy.
  • Retains customers through excellent service delivery to enhance customer satisfaction.
  • Responsible for managing costs in the area to ensure productivity and profit.
  • Ensures right people in the right place with high productivity.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to develop strong business relationships within all levels of management; ability to understand, influence and persuade across all levels of the organization, exercising a high degree of confidentiality, professionalism, poise, tact, and diplomacy to accomplish objective.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision, multitask and possess strong initiative, exercise independent judgment within established systems and procedures.
  • Ability to lead teams remotely and the ability to adjust communication style for different situations and cultures.

  • Possess organizational and time management skills with ability to prioritize, be detail oriented and results driven.
  • Attention to detail with a high level of accuracy.
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills, including strong verbal and listening skills.
  • Must possess an advanced proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, Share Point, and Outlook.
  • Must have an advanced communication (verbal, written and listening) skills in order to communicate at different levels throughout the organization and with exterior organizations, etc..
  • Fluency in English verbal and written communication skills required. Bilingual – English/Spanish desired.


Education, Qualifications, Certifications, and Licenses
Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Maritime Administration, Business Administration or recognized equivalent from an accredited university preferred; equivalent experience maybe substitutes for educational requirements.
  • Five plus years years experience in a senior operational/business managerial role with suitable international operations or related services, in the shipping or service industry, with the ability to run a cost-efficient business operation across a large geographical area.
  • Experience working within complex international organizations.
  • Proven ability to manage projects effectively and achieving operational success.
