Job Number: 24000137
Requisition Title : Carbon Markets Policy Specialist
Description :

Your team responsibilities

We are looking for a Carbon Markets Policy Specialist to join our Carbon Markets Policy & Guidance team. The team tracks organisations and governments seeking to shape private sector responses to climate change and the development of the carbon credit market on the path to net zero. This vacancy is for a mid- to senior-level researcher to join our team and take the lead on carbon market policy research in the Asia-Pacific region.

About the role:

This role will take a leading role on the continued development of MSCI Carbon Markets policy analysis, with a particular focus on the Asia-Pacific region. The Carbon Markets Policy Specialist will also be involved in collating qualitative and quantitative data to track organisations, investors and governments seeking to shape corporate responses to climate change and the use of carbon credits.

Key to success in this role will be the ability to generate concise insights from disparate sources of information, covering emerging or fast-moving policy areas and complex standards, reports, and regulations.

You’ll be part of an industry-leading network of creative, curious, and entrepreneurial pioneers. This is a space where you can challenge yourself, set new standards and perform beyond expectations for yourself, our clients, and our industry.
  • Wherever you are located you will find transparent compensation schemes and employee benefits that can help ensure your financial security and health. While they vary by different locations, we offer a broad range of benefits that are part of the value you receive as an MSCI employee.
  • Our flexible ways of working will allow you to maximize your potential, and we will empower you with the trust, accountability, and advanced technology to perform at your very best.
  • You’ll find a purposeful approach to wellbeing to provide you with all the resources you need to be your best at work and in your personal life. Our ‘Here For You’ Employee Assistance Program is available for our employees globally, providing confidential emotional support, financial and legal advice free of charge.

Your key responsibilities
Successful candidates will have research, advisory or public policy experience relating to climate policy, carbon markets, or corporate climate strategies. This may have been gained through experience with research firms, governments, consultancy, corporate or investor sustainability teams, think tanks, NGOs, or academia.

Candidates should have a strong team ethic, excellent written communications skills, and be capable of extracting insights and communicating them with clarity to senior-level audiences.

Responsibilities will include:
  • Analysis of national and subnational climate and carbon market policy in a range of countries, including conducting interviews and preparing country profiles.
  • Tracking developments in international policy and standards relating to climate change, net zero and the voluntary carbon market.
  • Qualitative and quantitative research across the policy areas covered by the team.
  • Thought leadership on carbon markets and climate policy, with a focus on Asia-Pacific.
  • Communicating insights internally and externally, delivered to clients through client meetings and conferences, plus monthly reporting, an online platform, webinars and other research projects.

Your skills and experience that will help you excel
  • Undergraduate and/or post-graduate degree in Environmental Studies, Climate Change, Geography, or a related field. Post-graduate degree preferred.
  • At least 5 years’ experience from the public, private, financial or NGO sectors relating to climate change, net zero, carbon markets or similar.
  • Experience with national climate policy or international climate negotiations is particularly welcomed.
  • Proven responsibility for delivering reports, briefings, or other outputs.
  • Experience/knowledge across various climate policy issues, with the ability to extract insights and communicate complex issues to senior-level audiences.
  • Excellent English-language communication, writing and presentation skills to clearly articulate ideas and facilitate strong relations with a global team of carbon and climate research analysts, technology and operations teams.
  • Other language skills of relevance to the Asia-Pacific region would be a major asset in this role.
  • Demonstrable enthusiasm for addressing climate change in the corporate and financial sectors.

This role is for you if you are:
  • Aware of what a corresponding adjustment is and actively interested in Article 6 debates.
  • Inquisitive, analytical, and naturally inclined to ask, ‘But what does this mean?’, ‘So what?’ and ‘What happens next?’
  • Comfortable both writing a 50-page report and trying to summarise a new policy development in a sentence
  • Collaborate generously with your teammates but effective at working independently
  • Are passionate and pragmatic about how the world can reach net zero

How we’ll support you

  • We believe new and challenging experiences drive personal growth and innovation. With the right challenges, encouragement, and development support you can shape your own career experience. Career paths are multi-directional, and we encourage and support internal mobility to help you identify new opportunities to progress and take control of your future.
  • As a new joiner you’ll be enrolled on our Global Orientation interactive learning experience to set you up for success.
  • Our tailored learning opportunities will enable you to acquire the skills you need at your own pace, choosing between the courses and certifications best suited to you. Our Learning@MSCI platform coupled with access to Linked In Learning Pro will provide you with all the resources you need for to accelerate your professional growth.
