Job Overview

The English business unit’s goals are to deliver more widespread and better quality English language teaching. The opportunity to do this in Korea is based on the huge demand for English from a hard-working and aspirational audience. In order to achieve our goal, the British Council Korea launched a new product, my Class, and opened the first my Class dedicated branch in the British Council network in 2014. This was followed by the first Young Learner branch in Korea. The next phase of development took place in 2015 with the move into specialisation and the opening of one dedicated Adult Branch and two new dedicated Young Learners Branches. The B2B team started in September 2022 and operates from the Adults centre in Euljiro, but offers a wide range of courses in offsite locations. The courses range from lower-level general English courses to more specialised business skills courses.

Role Purpose
  • To maintain and enhance professional development and academic quality in the teaching centre, through the management of in-house teacher development programme and support
  • To promote and ensure quality teaching and effective learning of English
  • To provide learners with a rewarding and stimulating English language learning experience
  • To support the wider aims of British Council and its cultural relations mission

Accountabilities

  • Delivering teaching to the highest standards of ELT
  • Having significant experience in the delivery of Business English as well as a solid understanding of how to create engaging lessons that effectively meet learner needs
  • Possessing an awareness of current trends in business skills courses
  • Contributing to the British Council’s Regional Quality in the Classroom initiatives for Adult learner product and delivery
  • Enhancing the British Council’s reputation as an expert in ELT
  • Contribute to the development, evaluation, and improvement of English Language courses, materials, and related services, to meet students’ needs by actively working as a member of the teaching team
  • Provide excellent customer service through counseling, induction, motivation sessions, and other customer-facing activities
  • Engage actively in professional development and performance management to position at the forefront of the best English Language Teaching practices ensure quality and high standards in teaching and learning, and maintain the British Council’s
  • Support local marketing and promotional strategy, and assist the Teaching Centre team in delivering excellent customer service for B2B and YL products

Qualification
Essentials

  • Bachelor's degree (in any discipline)
  • Cambridge CELTA or Trinity certificate TESOL


Desirables

  • Recognized Diploma in EFL i.e. Cambridge DELTA or Trinity Diploma

Work Experience
Essentials

  • 2 years full-time post certificate i.e. CELTA or Trinity certificate TESOL – with experience gained from teaching General/ Business English to Adults.
  • Note a minimum of 1200+ hours of experience should have been gained from teaching Adult and YL learners.

Desirable

  • Experience working with clients outside of the center in a business environment


Salary & Benefits

  • Package: KRW 3,493,148 - KRW 4,123,233 depending on qualifications and experience. This includes KRW 1,000,000 (one million Korean won) per month housing allowance.
  • Housing: The British Council Korea will provide support for a security deposit, i.e. key money, in advance. The key money will be paid up to the amount of KRW 10,000,000 (ten million Korean won) for a single lease. The key money is paid by the British Council to the lessor on the employee’s behalf and is returned to the British Council upon expiry of the lease.
  • Annual Leave: Annual paid leave is 35 days. In addition, there are 14 public holidays per year.
  • Medical Allowances: All British Council teachers are registered with Allianz Partners, the designated British Council insurer, to receive medical cover for themselves and their dependents. The teacher is responsible for an annual deductible of £150 for everyone who makes a claim
  • Settling-in allowance, Baggage allowance, and Travel Allowance: NOT applicable for this role.


Additional Information

  • Contract Duration: 24 Months
  • Contract Hours: 33 hours per week including 21 hours of teaching.
  • Work schedule: The successful post holder will work 5 days a week and one weekend day and have two consecutive days off.
    • Our B2B Centre is based in Euljiro and teachers usually work either from Tuesday-Saturday or Sunday-Thursday. The latest in center class finishes at 9:45 pm with classes being offered in the morning & evening. The busiest times are during business lunchtime and after work. At weekends, classes may start at 10:00 am and finish at 5:30 pm. As each business has different operational needs the successful applicant for this post will need to be able to work flexibly.
    • Travel between locations will be required to teach at different locations.
  • Local restrictions on employment: To obtain a teaching visa, teachers’ nationalities and university degrees must be from a native English-speaking country (UK, Ireland, US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa) defined by the government of South Korea.
    • This position is for F-type visa holders only, visa holders must have the right to work and stay in the country.
