The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest ranked scientific research organizations in the world. The newest EMBL site is located in the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park (PRBB), one of the largest infrastructures in Southern Europe dedicated to translational research.
The main focus of the EMBL Barcelona site is in tissue biology and disease modeling. This particular position is for a Post Doc researcher to work in the laboratory of Dr. Talya Dayton at EMBL Barcelona as part of the grant PID2023-152948NA-I00 funded by MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033 and by the ESF+.
The Dayton lab develops 3D in vitro organoid models of human tissue (airway/lung and patient tumors) to recapitulate developmental and cancer phenotypes of a specialized, hormone-producing cell type, the neuroendocrine cell. The group has two broad areas of interest – development and cancer – and we are interested in understanding how developmental and cancer pathways intersect and can be manipulated for patient benefit. Your role

We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher to work on a project using human organoid models to understand how hypoxia, nicotine, and genetic perturbations influence the plasticity of pulmonary neuroendocrine cells and their susceptibility to cancer. Ultimately, we aim to generate genetically engineered human organoid models of neuroendocrine cancer. The project will involve international collaborations with clinicians and environmental epidemiologists as well as the generation and analysis of single cell -omics datasets. Many details of the project can be tailored to fit the candidate’s particular expertise and interests. This specific position is for a 3-year appointment with the possibility and expectation for renewal.
The successful candidate will be intrinsically motivated, and will lead their own project, contribute to other projects on a collaborative basis (both in the lab and with external collaborators) and may guide Ph D and Masters students in their research. Importantly, the candidate will contribute to shaping the environment and research of a young and growing research team.

You have

Ph D and/or MD or equivalent doctoral degree
demonstration of expertise in the form of published paper(s) or preprints
strong practical skills in primary cell culture
knowledge of advanced gene editing techniques and CRISPR/Cas9-based screens
ability to prioritize, see the big picture, and nevertheless focus on details
ability to work independently, quickly set up effective networks and working relationships
excellent verbal and written communication skills in English
