The Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG) is an international biomedical research institute of excellence, based in Barcelona, Spain, with more than 400 scientists from 44 countries. The role

We are seeking a motivated research trainee to analyse historical genome-wide association studies (GWAS) data, with a focus on identifying sex-differential effects, heritabilities, and pleiotropies across a range of human diseases and anthropometric traits. The successful candidate will work with data from large databases such as EGA, db Ga P, and ad-hoc consortia. This position requires a strong background in computational analysis, programming, bioinformatics, and experience working with large genetic datasets.

About the EGA

The EGA (European Genome-Phenome Archive, www.ega-archive.org) is a resource for permanent secure archiving and sharing of human genomics. We host more than 16 petabytes of data, that includes more than 3700 studies and 8600 datasets. The EGA, co-managed by the CRG (www.crg.eu) and the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI, www.ebi.ac.uk), is an active partner in numerous international and national projects and contributes to establishing international standards in genomics and data security. The EGA team at CRG is a diverse group (currently 20 people and steadily growing) composed of bioinformaticians, developers and scientists from various backgrounds.

Whom would we like to hire?

Professional experience

Must Have

You have proven experience in working with large genomic datasets and bioinformatics tools

Desirable but not required/ Nice to have

You have 1-2 years of experience in computational biology, bioinformatics, or related fields

Education and training

You have a degree in life sciences and a MSc in bioinformatics or a related discipline

Languages

You are fluent in English

Technical skills

You have proficiency in programming languages such as Python, R, or Perl

You have experience with statistical tools and software, such as PLINK, GCTA, or other GWAS analysis tools

You have knowledge of working with large-scale genomic databases like EGA, db Ga P, or similar repositories

You have experience in managing and processing large datasets using bioinformatics pipelines

You have knowledge of genomic data formats (VCF, BED, etc.) and tools for manipulating them

Competences

Highly developed organizational skills

Strong problem-solving abilities, particularly in the context of complex data analysis

Excellent attention to detail, especially in data management and analysis

Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, for collaborating with multidisciplinary teams

Ability to work independently as well as in a collaborative research environment

The Offer – Working Conditions

Contract duration: 6 months, with possibility of extension 6 months

Estimated annual gross salary: Salary is commensurate with qualifications and consistent with our pay scales.
