Background
The development of processor technology (e.g. GPU) enables modern radar systems to use advanced signal processing methods. This thesis aims to study if NLS frequency estimation can solve a number of problems where traditional methods are not sufficient. In radar technology, estimation of detected target properties is central. In some dimensions, the estimation is equivalent to estimating one or more tones in noise. In real applications, phase and amplitude modulation of the ideal tone may occur, e.g. due to calibration errors in the system. Some methods, such as NLS estimation, allow the freedom to include a general model in the estimation, which can improve the estimate.
Description of the master thesis
The thesis is based on models of some known effects that distort the ideal signal to be estimated, optimize and analyze a number of different frequency estimation methods to clarify how effective these are in handling the distortions (and the estimate). The concept of effectiveness includes how well the method solves the problem and how computationally heavy it is. Optimization includes selection of model order, selection of initial values, parameterization of the optimization algorithm. The analysis is performed in Matlab on both simulated data and recorded radar video.
The work will be carried out with good supervision from staff both from a technical and user perspective. You will get an insight into product development at Saab and come into contact with several different roles within our organization. You will work with a team working with our Giraffe 1x Radar which is used both in land and seabased applications. You will work in a team of 5-8 engineers working on the development and integration of this system. It will have very practical moments mixed with theoretical.
Your profile
We are looking for a person with a combination of strong technical skills, interest in radar technology and signal processing, and the ability to handle both theoretical and practical aspects of the work. You should also possess good communication skills, as working in a team with different roles is part of the project. Additionally, having a keen interest in product development and the ability to adapt to various tasks within the Saab organisation would be beneficial. The work is suitable for 1-2 civil engineers, i.e. masters. Preferably with an electro background or equivalent.
This position requires that you pass a security vetting based on the current regulations around/of security protection. For positions requiring security clearance additional obligations on citizenship may apply.
