Post Doc position in Spatial Ecology and Biodiversity Conservation in Switzerland (2 years)
SPEED2ZERO focuses on biodiversity and climate change with an aim for a sustainable transformation to a net zero greenhouse gas and biodiversity-positive Switzerland (see https://speed2zero.ethz.ch/en/). In our project part, we are synergistically advancing models for aquatic and terrestrial biodiversity in Switzerland, integrating realistic and dynamic climate change, land use, and energy transition variables. The focus is on how and where to protect and sustain high biodiversity in the face of predicted climate and land-use changes, while considering placement of new renewable energy infrastructures. Across the whole initiative, we expect high-level output with respect to scientific findings and society- and policy-relevant products.
The postdoc will work with an extensive dataset that includes observations for over 20,000 species, high-resolution prediction maps (25-meter resolution habitat suitability maps for ~10,000 species across aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems), connectivity assessments, conservation prioritization layers, and comprehensive taxonomic information, including species traits, phylogeny, and species-to-NCP (Nature’s Contributions to People) relationships.
This position allows a high level of own ideas and contributions regarding scientific questions and themes covered, and development of independent questions that complement the initiative’s focus are specifically desired. We are particularly interested in fine-tuning and reassessing existing biodiversity models to better integrate local and mechanistic processes. Key research questions will explore the interplay of ecological processes across spatial and temporal scales, with a particular interest in placing greater focus on aquatic biodiversity and its links to terrestrial ecosystems. A central goal is to integrate these insights within the context of renewable energy infrastructure development, such as hydro, solar, and wind energy.
For the project, the Altermatt lab offers state-of-the-art infrastructure, access to high-performance computing resources, and an interdisciplinary collaborative network including collaboration with the research groups of Prof. N. Zimmerman (WSL/ETHZ), Prof. L. Pellissier (WSL/ETHZ), and Prof. C Graham (WSL/ETHZ).
We are seeking a highly motivated, enthusiastic, and independent candidate with a passion for science. Applicants should hold a Ph D in Ecology, Biodiversity and Conservation Sciences, or any other quantitative field that equips them to advance spatially explicit biodiversity data and models. A strong conceptual understanding of ecological theory, biodiversity science, and quantitative modeling is essential, along with advanced statistical skills. Proficiency in processing large datasets and utilizing high-performance computing resources (e.g., Slurm/Linux HPC clusters) is required. Excellent communication and writing skills in English, along with strong work ethics, creative thinking, and leadership in project management, are essential. The successful candidate will work closely with other postdocs on the project and is expected to lead aspects of project development. This position is hosted at Eawag and the working language is English.
The Altermatt lab has a shared base at University of Zurich and at Eawag. It offers a stimulating and international research environment, excellent research facilities and a lively and social working place. Zurich hosts many other research groups in ecology and biodiversity research and is among the world’s leading cities in terms of science, culture and quality of life.
Eawag and University of Zurich are both committed to promoting diversity and equal opportunities for underrepresented minorities, and to support the compatibility of family and work. Applications from women are especially welcome.
Applications must be submitted by November 5th, 2024, and should include a motivation letter with a description of relevant experience, an outline of your ideas for the project (max. 1 page), a complete CV (including a publication list), the names and email addresses of three academic references and copies of academic qualification certificates.
The position is open from January 2025, and the successful candidate is expected to start no later than March 2025, with an earlier start preferred.
For further information, consult www.altermattlab.ch or directly contact Prof. Dr Florian Altermatt. Phone: +41 58 765 55 92, E-mail: florian.altermatt@ieu.uzh.ch.
We look forward to receiving your application. Please send it through this webpage, any other way of applying will not be considered.
