About the role
Lead Software Engineer (R&D) - Istanbul, Turkey
As a member of the AI R&D team, you’ll develop high-performance statistical, machine learning, and numerical optimization applications and packages to be used by our AI production team. Our higher dimensional optimization technology requires extremely high precision estimates to operate at full performance. We work with methods that are computationally expensive even for moderately sized datasets.
In this role, you will dive into our core machine-learning algorithms, tune them for performance, apply parallelization strategies where possible, and implement the next generation of algorithms. You will also set up simulation and performance labs to understand the performance of our pairing software, working closely with researchers and other R&D engineers.
You will need to work with product design and delivery teams to develop and deploy new products (data pipeline backend, high-performance computation framework, task scheduling, API and service implementation, Dev Ops) for our clients across the world.
This role may require all phases of software engineering including, requirements, design, code, test, integration, and debug. We highly value doing research, trying new things, and understanding the technical depth of algorithms. We are looking for a detail-oriented, analytic, and hardworking software engineer who seeks to learn all the time and is not afraid to try and have fun simultaneously.
This position reports to the Director of AI R&D.
Key Responsibilities
- Design multi-component service and backend architectures that can process high volume/high-speed data, apply business & analytics logic and serve to client or UI interfaces.
- Work with a multidisciplinary team of domain experts, systems architects, data scientists, and engineers to customize products according to external client and internal power user needs
- Lead delivery of software projects and product development of significant impact and scale
- Design and complete a medium to large medium-sized task independently
Minimum Qualifications
- 3+ years’ full-time experience in software design and development, especially with computationally intensive applications
- Previous Python experience is preferred.
- Proven software engineering experience in at least one Object Oriented language, Java or C++ are desirable
- Good understanding of object-oriented design/programming, design patterns, algorithms, data structures, etc.
- Good understanding of multi-threading
- + Strong knowledge and understanding of architectural concepts (microservices, load-balancing, concurrency)
- Passion for writing beautiful code and tuning performance
- Strong ability to think analytically and a basic familiarity with statistics, machine learning, or numerical optimization
- Solid written and verbal communication skills to document and explain complex systems
- Demonstrated ability to manage time independently and take projects to completion
- Willingness to both teach others and learn new techniques
- Comfort working in a collaborative environment with cross-team communication to bring projects into production
Preferred Qualifications

Minimum B.S. from relevant quantitative fields including Computer Science, Engineering.

Graduate degree in Computer Science, Operations Research, Mathematics, or other field with relevant research
- Experience with Agile Development tools and processes
- Ability to set up performance labs
- Experience with a language like Python or R for data analysis.
- In-depth knowledge of machine learning, statistics, or linear programming.
- Linux system administration and shell scripting.
- Dev Ops or continuous deployment/integration experience.
