The Language Training Co. is looking for an Assistant Director of Studies to join our friendly team on a full-time basis (flexi-time in quieter seasons may be considered). The right candidate will be positive, proactive and have a can-do attitude.
Job Purpose
To assist the Director of Studies in managing the academic department of the school and assume responsibility for any professional duty of the Director of Studies as delegated, including operational tasks. The Assistant Director of Studies is responsible for supporting the academic management of the school and ensuring the teaching and learning opportunities of all courses and programmes are delivered to the highest standards.
Responsibilities
To assist the Director of Studies in:
Teaching Staff Management
  • Teacher recruitment in accordance with school policy.
  • Teacher induction, training and professional development.
  • Designing an updating CPD for all academic staff through class observations, insets sessions and advice on external training.
  • Provision of regular INSET sessions for members of the academic staff and external teachers in the BCP area.
  • Holding regular staff meetings as well as taking and filing minutes for future reference.
  • Arranging and supervising class handovers for teachers on annual leave and teaching covers for absent teachers. Making sure handovers are accurate so that learners have continuity of delivery approach and class content.
  • Revising and updating content of registers and continuous assessment policies.
  • Ensuring teachers are up to date with administrative procedures including registers, continuous assessment, lesson plans and class profiles.
  • Booking and attending conferences and training days, mutually agreed upon with the Managing Director.
HR Administration
  • Completing pre-employment checks to ensure full compliance.
  • Maintaining records of sickness and absence on teachers’ log.
  • Maintaining performance records, feedback and appraisals on teachers’ files.
Academic Administration
  • Class timetabling and allocating teachers to classes and courses.
  • Selecting and assigning materials to courses and programmes. Designing materials when required.
  • Carrying out intake procedures including level tests (online and in-school), needs analysis and group placement.
  • Supervising continuous assessment procedures including qualitative data obtained from classroom performance and quantitative data from tests and quizzes.
  • Offering provision of independent learning materials to students via library, study room and Google Classrooms.
  • Ordering materials which are appropriate to the needs of teachers and learners. Meeting publishing representatives to source new materials and course packs.
  • Developing, organising and maximising in-house resources and materials so they can be easily located and reused by teachers.
Academic Support
  • Carrying out pre-course interviews and needs analysis with prospective students.
  • Analysing students progress in accordance with the school’s continuous assessment policy.
  • Counselling learners on all academic matters including choice of external exams, language levels, specialist courses, and progress routes.
  • Carrying out classroom teaching during low season.
Operational
  • Deputising for the Director of Studies as necessary.
  • Working within parameters set by Accreditation UK / British Council.
  • Having the emergency telephone and acting as deputy school manager in accordance with the emergency telephone rota and procedures.
  • Ensuring classrooms are kept tidy and set up correctly for use each morning.
  • Ensuring all students communications including posters, timetables and policies are displayed in all classrooms and communal areas.
  • Ensuring all classrooms have a phonemic chart, UK map and a well-maintained whiteboard.
Person Specification
Education (essential)
TEFLQ – Cambridge DELTA or equivalent
Experience
  • 2 years’ experience of delivering TEFL Junior Courses
  • 5 years’ experience of delivering TEFL Adult Courses
  • 1 year experience in Academic Management
Skills
