Are you ready to dive into the forefront of nuclear innovation?
Atkins Réalis is one of the world’s leading multi-disciplinary consultancy firms offering unparalleled opportunities for individuals in search of a rewarding career. We offer more than just a job. We offer an opportunity to make a difference and shape the world to benefit future generations and the environment.
We are passionate about what we do, and when you join us, you’ll be part of a collaborative environment, where everyone’s voice is valid and treated equally. So, make sure to ask us about our flexible and remote working policies designed to help you get the most out of life.
In the energy sector, Atkins Réalis supports the whole life cycle of the nuclear industry, from building the next generation of nuclear power stations, to maintaining the current fleet of operational reactors, and helping to solve decommissioning challenges.
It’s a stimulating time for the decommissioning sector as there is a growing sense of responsibility and investment for the safe dismantling and disposal of ageing nuclear reactors and management of the UK’s significant inventory of nuclear legacy wastes. Across the globe, there are difficult issues to overcome to create a sustainable energy supply and this is a great opportunity to make a positive difference to people's lives and the environment.
We are looking for Assistant Radioactive Waste Consultants to join our Environment, Waste and Radiological Services (EWRS) capability, a technically diverse team with nationally and internationally recognised expertise in a wide range of scientific topics within the nuclear industry.
By joining a team of waste and decommissioning, environmental and radiological experts, you will play an instrumental role in driving innovation within the nuclear industry and tackling the unique challenges the industry is facing in securing a sustainable future.
What you’ll be doing:
As an Assistant Radioactive Waste Consultant within EWRS, you will apply and advance your technical expertise, skills and knowledge of the nuclear sector on a wide range of projects covering the entire nuclear lifecycle. Recent key projects that Atkins Réalis consultants within the team have been involved include -
  • Aiding in detailed design of new Small Modular Reactor (SMR) technologies, considering waste and future decommissioning at the initial design stage.
  • Supporting legacy decommissioning sites, devising solutions to a vast range of radioactive waste problems.
  • Working on siting, permissions and waste acceptance criteria for the UK’s Geological Disposal Facility (GDF).
  • Providing technical support to the next generation fleet of UK reactors.
  • Supporting the UK’s nuclear deterrent system, including, operation, maintenance and decommissioning.
  • Undertaking research and waste management projects into new fusion related technologies.
  • Alongside delivering projects, you will continue to develop your technical skills through targeted training, on the job experience and continual professional development as you work towards obtaining chartership.
What you can bring:
Ideally, applicants will have:
  • A degree qualification in a scientific or engineering subject (e.g. chemistry, physics, nuclear, environmental science; chemical, nuclear, process engineering etc.) or significant technical expertise in a relevant field.
  • Experience in the nuclear industry or other relevant high-hazard field (e.g. Oil & Gas, Defence, Aerospace etc.); and / or, experience in consultancy work.
  • A questioning attitude and a drive for technical innovation and doing things differently.
  • Flexibility to travel to visit client sites or other Atkins Réalis offices, as required.
  • A good standard of written English with the ability to write clear and concise technical reports.
  • A drive to work with others, both with clients and colleagues, through effective communication, team collaboration, and stakeholder management.
Desirable skills and qualities:
  • Knowledge or appreciation of the nuclear sector and nuclear decommissioning.
  • On-site experience at a nuclear facility or high-hazard industrial site.
  • An appreciation of radiation principles and protection requirements.
  • An appreciation of radioactive waste management, best practice, and waste solutions.
