Contract Hours
This is a part-time post based on an annualised hours 5-day leisure contract. Monthly pay is based on a weekly annual average of 22.5 hours per week across a 12-month period. You will work with your manager to decide on the best way to spread your hours across the year to meet the needs of the service. An Annualised Hours Agreement supports this post, which stipulates that the minimum shift length will be no less than 2 hours.
Come and join our team
We are currently looking for a Schools Heritage Officer to join our team. You will be working within Cof Gâr, Carmarthenshire’s museums and arts service who are responsible for Carmarthenshire Museum, Parc Howard Museum, Dylan Thomas Boathouse, and the Museum of Land Speed. Both Parc Howard and the Museum of Land Speed have recently undergone major redevelopments providing exciting opportunities to develop new learning programmes. You will also be working with the rest of the Cof Gâr team as we look to redevelop the rest of our venues and reimagine how we can deliver our services.
The Role
You will play a key role in overseeing the coordination, safe delivery and evaluation of a schools’ heritage learning programme aligned to the Curriculum in Wales and wellbeing agendas. You will work with education services at all levels, including primary, secondary and Welsh Language schools. You will create opportunities for learning outside the classroom, digital and online learning, loan boxes and school visits, and enrichment training for teachers. The scope of the role also includes pre-school, home schooling, FE, school holiday programmes and work experience opportunities to deliver our learning for life agenda.
The Duties
A typical day in the life of a Schools Heritage Officer could involve:
  • Gaining a good working knowledge of each museum and its community, the collections.
  • Providing a safe schools’ heritage service and widening opportunities for people to visit museums.
  • Collaborating with colleagues and local partners to deliver an exemplary early years’ programme (0-7 years), including pre-school and foundation phase.
  • Contributing to the planning and delivery of projects, exhibitions and events.
  • Researching and testing teaching resources, self-directed activities, web content and e-learning material.
  • Ensuring all resources and activities are developed in accordance with the Service’s participatory values, involving the end user in decision-making and co-production.
  • Enabling young people to create content for digital platforms that promote engagement and ownership of and widening access to cultural heritage.
  • Helping to ensure safeguarding policy and procedure and its application when working with schools and young people.
  • Supporting the delivery of courses, training and events for educators and teachers.
  • Creating opportunities for people home schooling or attending alternative education provision to access learning programmes and resources.
  • Collaborating with schools, colleges and other agencies to widen opportunities for young people to participate and shape their local museum.
The Candidate
To be considered for the role you will need:
  • To be educated to degree level or a relevant level 5 qualification.
  • Hold a teaching qualification or have teaching/facilitating experience in a comparable setting.
  • High level written and oral communication skills, adept at communicating to a variety of audiences at all levels in Welsh and English.
  • Good computer literacy and an aptitude for engaging with and contributing to a range of online platforms.
  • Understanding of relevant policy, safeguarding and other legislations for working with children and young people.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of good practice in museum learning.
  • An in-depth knowledge of the Curriculum in Wales and other statutory education requirements.
  • Practical education delivery or teaching experience within an education or museum/ arts/ heritage environment.
  • Experience creating educational materials, sessions, and resources with clear learning outcomes.
  • Experience working with young people of a wide variety of ages, abilities, and backgrounds.
  • Knowledge of evaluating resources, services and experiences.
  • The ability to travel throughout Carmarthenshire and work from all museum premises.
  • Ability to carry out light manual tasks such as moving handling objects and setting up and down for activities.

Part Time Hours: This is a part-time post based on an annualised hours 5-day leisure contract. Monthly pay is based on a weekly annual average of 22.5 hours per week across a 12-month period. An Annualised Hours Agreement supports this post, which stipulates that the minimum shift length will be no less than 2 hours.
