Job Description
Have you worked in the building construction industry and enjoy reading/interpreting plans and helping citizens and customers make sure their building project meets required building codes? Can you troubleshoot issues and help solve challenges in the building arena while ensuring compliance with laws and codes? Are you book and people smart? The City of Lynn Haven is looking for a sharp, experienced individual to move building and development in our city in a positive manner as our Building Inspector. The Building Inspector is responsible for ensuring residential, industrial, and commercial building construction work complies with Florida Building Code (FBC) and local ordinances. Work is performed under the direction of the Building Code Official. The Building Inspector will review plans and complete field inspections of construction projects ensuring compliance. The Building Inspector performs a broad range of advanced inspections in one or more system areas (i.e., building, plumbing/mechanical/gas, electrical and structural). The Building Inspector also acts as a building ambassador for the city, communicating changes and challenges which must be corrected to ensure completion of building projects.

The ideal candidate has a standard high school or GED (required), and five (5) years combined experience in the field of construction or a related field. Preferably, the candidate holds a Building Inspector certification with the State of Florida or is provisionally certified. The candidate may also have building code inspection experience, or demonstrate a combination of post-secondary education in the field of construction or related field, and a degree in Building Construction, engineering, or a similar field. Prior construction experience may be substituted in lieu of degree. Candidates must be able to work with varying project deadlines, must have exceptional interpersonal and problem-solving skills, and must be able to determine policy or strategy directions. Must meet the requirements of Section 468.609(c), Florida Statutes, and be able to possess a standard class certificate from the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulations “Building Code Administrators and Inspectors Board” (e.g., One and two family dwelling inspector; electrical, plumbing or mechanical Inspector; commercial electrical, plumbing, and mechanical inspector; building inspector, or combination inspector. Must have valid Florida Driver’s License. Ability to lift 50 pounds.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Vast knowledge in construction techniques and current state laws
  • Ability to deal with public and make professionally sound decisions.
  • Must be able to read and interpret plans, blueprints and specifications
  • Ability to effectively communicate decisions with citizens and building professionals
  • Work within construction areas using ladders, scaffolds and on partially constructed structures
  • Performs other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Possess at a minimum a standard high school or GED. Prefer State of Florida Certification or Provisional Certification, and the possession of a degree in Building Construction, or related field
  • Five (5) years' experience in building construction, prior construction experience may be substituted in lieu of degree
  • Ability to possess a 1 & 2 family dwelling inspector by the State of Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation, or be licensed in all fields including Building, Plumbing, Mechanical, and Electrical inspector
  • Able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with citizens, developers and builders, engineering associations, contractors, and related groups
  • Strong computer and internet skills
  • Must have valid Florida Driver's License
