The 4-H Youth Development Department is one of the four components of the Cooperative Extension Service. The department ties directly into the USDA as a Federal partner. The 4-H Youth Department program is the youth education arm of the USDA and thus has ties with all 50 states as a National effort in youth development. The department provides leadership and program support to field faculty in all 100 counties. The outreach of these efforts involves over 200,000 youth and 25,000 volunteers. The department operates, supports, staffs, and designs programs at five education centers. This position will be assigned to the Eastern 4-H Environmental Education Conference Center which is a year-round conference and training facility operated as an extension of College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, North Carolina State University, and administered through the Department of 4-H Youth Development and the Cooperative Extension Service. The mission of the Center is to provide year-round training and educational programs for youth, community groups, business and corporate sectors, and University students and faculty. The Center provides lodging, food service, and programming.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead recruitment, selection, and onboarding of program staff, including responsibility for summer and seasonal payroll.
- Provide leadership in staff orientation, pre-service, in-service training, and ongoing development for program staff under supervision.
- Offer regular supervision, support, and evaluation through staff meetings and individual conferences.
- Develop staff schedules and assignments, coordinating with other directors to balance program and facility responsibilities.
- Conduct training sessions for teachers, agents, and volunteers to support program leadership and expertise. Support training for other programs at the center and the statewide camping program.
- Provide leadership in developing age-appropriate programs following NC Cooperative Extension, 4-H Youth Development, and American Camp Association guidelines.
- Manage the acquisition and maintenance of necessary program facilities and equipment within budget limits.
- Regularly update and implement a risk management plan for program areas, addressing and mitigating risks.
- Collaborate with Food Service and Maintenance supervisors to meet the needs of user groups. Evaluate and report on program outcomes and effectiveness.
- Assist in developing annual budgets for assigned programs and manage programs within budget constraints, adjusting as needed. Serve as group leader or instructor when needed and oversee all summer camp programs.
- Lead the development of brochures and marketing materials to accurately represent assigned programs.
- Serve as the primary contact for program users, coordinating with program coordinators and individuals to meet group needs.
- Conduct site visits for teachers and parents to explain the program and aid in local marketing efforts. Create visual displays, presentations, and social media content to promote the Center’s programs and maintain up-to-date marketing materials.
- Support fundraising efforts for the Eastern 4-H Educational Center and its programs, collaborating with the Advisory Board and committees.
- Assist in designing e-marketing materials for summer camps, distribute them to NC 4-H agents, and manage camp registrations.
- Maintain communication with camper parents and external organizations (e.g., NC Grange, Camp Corral, Operation Purple) regarding registration and camp updates. Provide parent updates through social media, email, and phone during camp weeks and create superlative certificates for counselors to complete each week.
- Meet with users and supporters to communicate the Center’s mission.
- Serve on the Center’s administrative leadership team, helping to resolve cross-departmental issues and identify needs.
- Establish relationships with outdoor and environmental education organizations and leverage American Camp Association resources.
- Lead the computerization of information processes and perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
On-Call Responsibilities
- On-call duties, primarily from August through May, to support groups renting the facility. Responsibilities also extend during the summer camp season (June through early August), requiring on-site presence to assist with camp operations.
- A bachelor’s degree is required in the areas of Education, Recreation, Biology, Botany, or other related majors, with at least 3 years of relevant experience
- Applicant must have demonstrated leadership and supervisory skills, effective written and verbal communication skills, a commitment to the organization’s values, and the ability to work effectively with and through others.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Must be flexible and highly motivated.
- Evidence of excellent interpersonal skills, team building, problem-solving ability, networking skills, and ability to work with various populations is necessary.
- Certification as a Basic Low and High Challenge Course instructor, Red Cross-certified Lifeguard, or the ability to obtain certification in Basic Low and High Challenge Course facilitation.
- Training or experience in environmental education, outdoor education, working with individuals with disabilities, and/or experiential education.
- Degree in Recreation, Counseling, or a related field.
- Experience working with youth, including curriculum design and development, educational support materials, program assessment and evaluation, marketing, budget management, proposal development, and grant management.
- Strong organizational skills, proficiency in word processing and data management, and experience in personnel hiring and management.
- Possession of valid NC driver’s license or the ability to obtain one within 60 days of start.
