Registered Nurse - Organ Placement Coordinator

JOB SUMMARY: The Organ Placement Coordinator supports the mission, goals, and strategic plan of Texas Organ Sharing Alliance by allocating donated organs according to established organizations and OPTN policies in collaboration with the Organ Recovery Coordinator (ORC), Administrator on Call (AOC), physicians, transplant centers, and TOSAs Medical Director as needed. The OPC must possess a variety of medical and social skills, in addition to the ability to work independently and make critical decisions within a highly stressful environment. This position required on occasions to travel by company or personal automobile or commercial aircraft to accomplish the job responsibilities.
WORK SCHEDULE: The Organ Placement Coordinator (OPC) position is a full-time exempt position which shares 24 hour on-call responsibilities on a rotating schedule, which includes weekends and evenings. Assignments may require 24 plus hours of continuous service during periods of increased activity.
KEY FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES:
- Coordinates renal and pancreas allocation according to established organizational allocation policies and OPTN/UNOS policies.
- Allocates authorized organs for research including organs not accepted for transplant.
- Serves as the primary coordinator for all communication and reporting to the renal transplant programs, and renal/pancreas transplant programs.
- Facilitates all aspects of renal perfusion
- Coordinates all arrangements for donor specimen, tissue, and/or organ delivery.
- Informs all transplant centers of GPS trackers attached to accepted organs, monitors the tracking of each organ to the transplant center, and coordinates/monitors the return of all GPS trackers to the TOSA office.
- Documents complete, accurate, and timely information of donor related activities in the confidential donor record, forms, and database according to established policies and procedures.
- Shares complex clinical information about donors through extensive interaction with transplant surgeons and coordinators.
- Ensures that all donated organs are allocated in an efficient and equitable manner, in accordance with TOSA and OPTN/UNOS policies.
- Assists with transplant center imports offers as appropriate.
- Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with all levels of TOSA staff, hospital staff, contracted HLA laboratory, and transplant center staff.
- Consults with the AOC, Associate Director of Clinical Services and/or Sr. Director of Clinical Operations regarding clinical and technical aspects of organ allocation and placement.
- Reports any problems or incidents with any organization or individual throughout the organ placement process to the Organ Recovery Coordinator managing the donor recovery and to the Associate Director of Clinical Services and/or Sr. Director of Clinical Operations.
- Completes donor information records and all other required documentation and/or communications concurrently and within set timeframes as established TOSA policy.
- Licensed nurse/physician's assistant or health care professional with minimum of two years experience in transplantation and/or organ procurement preferred.
- Demonstrates teamwork, clinical, analytical, organizational, and communication skills in a high stress environment.
- Physical requirements also include the ability to lift at least 50lbs.
- Maintaining confidentiality regarding all donor information.
