JOB SUMMARY
The Student Advocate assists schools and departments with implementing programs to support students’ emotional and educational growth; assists in monitoring behavior plans and communicating information to those who are in a ‘need to know,’ such as teachers, counselors, and administrators; builds appropriate and productive relationships to engage students in the learning environment; and provides updates and information to parents as directed by administration or counselors.
MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
All positions require selected candidates to be fingerprinted and successfully pass a criminal background check. Additional minimum required qualifications for this position are:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Speak, read, write, and present professionally, analyze, and interpret English written and verbal communications
- Ability to operate standard office equipment (e.g., phone, copier, scanner, fax machines, etc.)
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
These are examples of skills and experience that the best qualified candidates may have. Not having one or all of them does not disqualify any candidate from consideration.
- Experience working with student groups, community support agencies, community participation and involvement, or other job-related experience
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and experienced using data-based software
- Spanish or other language proficiency, including ability to read, write, speak, and understand
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Advocate for and provide support to assigned students based on needs, interests, and goals
- Communicate regularly with relevant school personnel and outside agencies to coordinate efforts based on established student plan
- Adhere to and apply school, district, and legal policies and procedures
- Establish appropriate relationships with students to promote a positive learning and working environment. Promote an environment conducive to student achievement and well-being
- Monitor student progress according to program specifications to support that students are meeting goals for academic, attendance, and citizenship
- Assist students in utilizing district-provided systems (e.g. computer systems, Power School, free and reduced lunch, etc.)
- Understand and use the school’s Excellence and Equity Plan (EEP) to support student development in the school
- Implement intervention protocols (PBIS or MTSS) for identified students to address academic and school attendance issues, alleviate isolation, identify support resources, enhance coping skills, and provide referrals to Counseling or administrative staff
- Maintain a variety of confidential and non-confidential manual and electronic records (e.g. student goals, parent information, follow-up contacts, evaluations, reviews, interventions, reintegration programs, etc.) to document and compile activities in compliance with program guidelines
- Perform record-keeping, planning, and clerical functions (e.g. individualized plans around needs and interests, activities, documentation, etc.) to provide necessary records/materials to teachers, administrators, and school counselors. Prepare standard documentation (e.g. correspondence to students and parents, reports, etc.) to document activities, provide written reference, and convey information from administration or counselors
- Coordinate and assist outreach with the school community such as school-based food pantries, Utah Food Bank, Department of Workforce Services, and other community agencies to assist students
- Maintain a visible, accessible presence on campus at assigned locations to increase student awareness of program and support services
- Communicate effectively with diverse individuals and groups of people while maintaining confidentiality and building positive working relationships with employees and stakeholders
- Participate in meetings, workshops, and seminars, as assigned to convey and gather information required to perform functions
- Work under limited supervision, utilizing time-management and prioritization strategies, accurately processing detailed information and meeting deadlines
- Support a team environment by collaborating with own and other work units to effectively perform the duties
- Adapt to changing work priorities and work with frequent interruptions, as required
- As needed, roll, push, pull, bend, reach, stoop, and lift up to 30 pounds
- Maintain regular and predictable attendance to fulfill job requirements efficiently and effectively
- Perform other related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit
EMPLOYEE SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: No
WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling up to 30 pounds, some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 45% sitting, 50% walking, and 5% standing. This job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment.
