Alegria Palenque Preservation Project

Volunteer Grant Writer

PART TIME

October 13, 2024

Job Overview
Alegría: Palenque Preservation Project (APPP) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization based in St. Louis, MO that funds the preservation of San Basilio de Palenque, a world heritage cultural site in the country of Colombia. This village was the very first free town founded by Africans who had escaped slavery, and currently receives little financial support from Colombia in preserving its museum and village cultural centers. San Basilio de Palenque is located about 30 minutes from Cartagena, Colombia, but the founder of APPP works in St. Louis. APPP endeavors to help preserve this site of living black history, and is in need of grant writing assistance to help win funding.

Due to a lack of funds and grant writing expertise, this is a volunteer position, to be compensated based on the amount of grants secured. APPP will compensate this volunteer with his or her desired percentage of grants secured (up to 50%), as well as serve as a professional or volunteer reference. Hours for this position are flexible and may match volunteer’s availability, as low as a few hours per week, any day of the week.
Responsibilities
The grant writer’s responsibilities are to research and apply for grants that this organization is eligible for, and to write proposals in response to approved requests for proposals (RFPs) in alignment with the organization’s mission, vision, and core values.
Essential Functions/Skills:
  • Conduct technical writing as needed for reports and documentation related to funded projects.
  • Write and edit proposal and concept papers in response to RFPs
  • Research funding opportunities (e.g., monitor websites and other media outlets for relevant RFPs)
  • Manage a calendar of RFP deadlines
  • Research demographic and other quantitative information in support of proposals
  • Coordinate timely submission of proposals
  • Provide information needed for the preparation of budgets to the Executive Director, for dissemination to the Board of Directors.
  • Communicate questions and updates regularly (e.g., weekly or as needed) with the Executive Director
  • Be familiar with city, state, and federal funding sources
  • At least one year of experience in grant-writing in a non-profit environment and a demonstrated record of success are required. Experience with government grants is preferred.
If you are passionate about making a difference through effective grant writing and fundraising efforts, we encourage you to apply for this exciting opportunity!
Additional information: The Executive Director is available on call, seven days a week.
