Program Overview:
The Mentoring Youth in Virginia (MYVA) program promotes positive civic and social engagement and supports educational and vocational advancement for refugee-eligible youth between the ages of 15 and 24 years old. Youth selected for the program are within their first five years of arrival in the United States and are matched with trained, adult mentors for a period of 6-12 months. Through this program, mentees will build self-esteem, communication skills, and improve their educational and vocational outcomes while fostering strong relationships with their peers, family, and community.

Mentor Responsibilities:
  • Develop a trusting, supportive relationship with a refugee youth, serving as a positive role model.
  • Meet with the assigned mentee for at least 4 hours each month over a 6-12 month period.
  • Provide guidance in areas such as educational achievement, career exploration, personal development, and social integration.
  • Help mentees navigate challenges related to adjusting to life in the U.S., including cultural differences, language barriers, and building a support system.
  • Support mentees in setting and achieving personal, educational, and vocational goals based on their needs and aspirations.
  • Engage mentees in activities that build confidence, improve communication skills, and encourage civic participation.
  • Participate in mentor training sessions, offered by LSSNCA, to ensure alignment with the goals and methods of the MYVA program.
  • Maintain regular communication with program staff, provide feedback on mentee progress, and report any concerns.
Qualifications:
  • Commitment to working with refugee youth and supporting their educational, vocational, and personal development.
  • Patience, empathy, and strong communication skills.
  • Willingness to commit to at least 4 hours per month over a 6-12 month period.
  • Ability to engage with youth from diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Must pass a background check (provided by LSSNCA) and attend required training.
  • Prior experience in mentoring, teaching, or youth development is beneficial but not required.
Benefits:
  • Opportunity to make a meaningful impact in the life of a young refugee as they adjust to life in the U.S.
  • Gain experience working with youth from diverse backgrounds and contributing to their educational and vocational success.
  • Build leadership and mentorship skills through training and hands-on experience.
  • Be part of a supportive and dynamic community of mentors and staff at LSSNCA.
To Apply:
Please contact Arian Asmaie. Asmaie A@lssnca.org, for more information or to submit your application. We look forward to having you as part of the MYVA team!

MYVA mentors must live within the DMV area.
The new policy states that mentors must be able to meet the mentee during the mentorship program.
