The Classification Branch plays a vital role in this mission by ensuring Australians have access to films, games, and publications (content) that are appropriately classified.


What We Do:

  • Provide expert advice: We advise the Minister for Communications on all matters relating to the classification of content, contributing to informed policy decisions.
  • Support decision-making: We provide secretariat services to the Classification Board and the Classification Review Board, the independent bodies responsible for classifying content.
  • Empower industry: We develop and maintain self-classification tools and programs, enabling industry to effectively classify their own content.
  • Deliver training: We provide classification training for industry and other government agencies, promoting understanding and compliance with the National Classification Scheme.

The opportunity we have available
The Classification Branch is seeking two dynamic individuals to join our team as Senior Project Officers.
Based in the vibrant Surry Hills area of Sydney, these ongoing APS6 positions offer a unique opportunity to contribute to the process of classifying films, games, and publications in Australia


What will you do?
As a Senior Project Officer, you will play a key role in the oversight of the National Classification Scheme and the Classification (Publications, Films and Computer Games) Act 1995 (the Act).
Your responsibilities will include:
  • Providing expert advice: Guide industry stakeholders on complying with the National Classification Scheme, ensuring a clear understanding of classification guidelines.
  • Shaping the future of classification: Design and implement initiatives to strengthen and promote the Scheme, contributing to its ongoing relevance and effectiveness.
  • Driving policy reform: Provide expert advice on implementing reforms to the National Classification Scheme, influencing the future of classification in Australia.
  • Supporting key decision-making: Provide secretariat support to the Classification Board and Classification Review Board, facilitating informed decision-making on content.
  • Managing critical projects: Oversee project procurement and management in support of the Classification Board, ensuring efficient and effective operations.
  • Communicating effectively: Prepare complex correspondence, reports, and briefings for a diverse audience, including industry, government, and the public.

Eligibility requirements
Employment with the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts is subject to conditions prescribed within the Public Service Act 1999 including:

  • Citizenship: To be eligible for employment with the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts applicants must be an Australian citizen.
  • Health Assessment: The preferred applicant may be required to undergo a medical examination conducted by the department’s preferred medical provider.
  • Security Clearance: The successful candidate must be able to obtain and/or maintain a security clearance at Baseline Level. You must be willing to disclose all relevant and required information. You must have lived in Australia, or have a checkable background, for at least the preceding five years for Baseline Vetting clearances. More information on the security clearance vetting process is available on the Australian Government Security Vetting Agency (AGSVA) website.

Timeline and assessment
A selection panel will be established to assess your suitability against the advertised role.
