Primary objective

Assist in the regional delivery of the Rangeland Monitoring Program and in the implementation of an integrated monitoring system to

evaluate and report on land condition and pastoral lease administration matters.

Key duties and responsibilities

1. Undertake pastoral lease inspections and ground-based rangeland monitoring for the assessment and reporting of land condition.

2. Undertake fieldwork (over the 5-month field season) on pastoral stations to monitor land condition, including the assessment of

species composition, validation of remote sensing products and collection of infrastructure data.

3. Assist in the compilation of land condition reports (over the 7-month office based period). Tasks include data management and

processing, vegetation identification, map production and report writing.

4. Under direction, maintain, clean and organise field equipment including monitoring tablets, tools and vehicles. Organise purchasing

and other maintenance tasks.

5. Assist in the editing of pastoral infrastructure data and the update of pastoral infrastructure maps as required.

6. Undertake assessments of, and report on, applications under the Pastoral Land Act 1992 including clearing, non-pastoral use, title

conversion and subdivision as necessary.

Selection criteria

Essential

1. A relevant qualification awarded by an Australian institution, or equivalent, or relevant experience in a field of technical work closely

related to conservation and land management and/or natural resource management.

2. Ability, experience or a willingness to safely undertake field work in a small team environment and camping for extended periods in

remote locations, with limited services and in potentially challenging climatic conditions.

3. Knowledge of, or experience in, land condition assessments, the Northern Territory pastoral industry or on-ground land management

in northern Australia.

4. Experience in a range of computer systems, including GIS (geographic information system), GPS (global positioning system) or tablet

computers for environmental field work, monitoring and reporting.

5. Experience with Microsoft Office software, good writing skills, and an ability to assist in the preparation of technical reports to a high

standard.

6. Demonstrated cross-cultural communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with a range of stakeholders.

7. Northern Territory drivers licence or equivalent and demonstrated ability to drive a manual, four-wheel drive vehicle.

Desirable

1. Experience in plant identification or a desire to obtain these skills.

2. Good organising and problem-solving skills and a practical, hands-on nature.
