The Austrian Archaeological Institute (Oe AI) at the Austrian Academy of Sciences (Oe AW), the largest non-
university establishment for fundamental research in Austria, is offering a position as

LABORATORY TECHNICIAN (F/M/X)
(full-time, 40 hours per week)

The Austrian Archaeological Institute is Austria's largest research institution in the field of archaeology and
ancient studies. We study human history from the Quaternary period to modern times, taking into account
material archaeological sources and written traditions. Our four Archaeological Sciences Labs (Bioarchaeology,
Ceramics, Geochemistry, and Lithics) feature top-equipped laboratory infrastructure for the analysis and
archaeological interpretation of materials. The laboratories are equipped with high-tech instruments, both portable
and bench-top, such as optical, digital, and scanning electron microscopes, portable XRF, portable FTIR, GC-MS,
XRD, and MC-ICP-MS.

We are seeking a skilled and motivated individual to join our institute as a Laboratory Technician.

Your tasks:

• Operation, maintenance, and quality control of our analytical devices.

• Preparation and processing of inorganic and organic archaeological sample series for analysis.

• Coordinating the usage of the laboratory devices.

• Ensuring the correct storage of expendables following national and international standards and regulations.

• Coordinating the necessary security controls and technical maintenance of instruments and laboratory

spaces.

Your profile:

• A graduate education in the fields of natural or applied sciences along with practical experience in material

analysis, or equivalent training.

• Laboratory work experience in sample preparation and processing, handling of instruments and chemical

agents.

• The willingness to undergo essential training and licensing (X-ray; handling of dangerous chemicals; first

aid) and to keep up with advances and adaptations in regulatory frameworks for the health and safety of
laboratory staff, including record keeping and providing instructions and training to other laboratory users.

• Proficiency in English (knowledge of German will be considered an asset).

• Excellent communication skills and a team-oriented work approach.

• Experience in mass spectrometry (GC-MS, ICP-MS), chromatography or phase analysis (e.g., XRD) would be

appreciated.

• Openness to expand your knowledge in analytical techniques and sample preparation procedures.

We offer an annual gross salary of € 50.029,70 according to the collective agreement of the Austrian Academy of
Science.
