About the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT)
The role of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) is to advance the interests of Australia and Australians internationally. This involves strengthening Australia’s security, enhancing Australia’s prosperity, delivering an effective and high quality overseas aid program and helping Australian travellers and Australians overseas.
The department provides foreign, trade and development policy advice to the Australian Government. DFAT also works with other Australian government agencies to drive coordination of Australia’s pursuit of global, regional and bilateral interests.
About the Position
The Multilateral Policy Officer assists with promoting Australia's political interests at the United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime (UNODC); United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA); other Vienna-based UN organisations; and the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE). The position is responsible for internal reporting on select policy and technical developments; supporting negotiations; representational work; and liaison with relevant organisational Secretariats and with other missions on specific political, technical, budget and other issues of high priority for Australia. It also provides support for visits, event management and advocacy as required.
The key responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:
- Support Australia's engagement in Vienna-based UN missions (principally the UNODC and UNOOSA) and the OSCE by attending and participating in relevant multilateral meetings and negotiations, and drafting briefing statements for Australia’s Permanent Representative/ other Diplomatic officers;
- Represent Australia at official meetings, events, and receptions with other missions and international organisations to advance Australian foreign policy priorities;
- Provide support for the Australian Permanent Mission’s public diplomacy and social media advocacy as it relates to UNODC, UNOOSA and OSCE-related activities and interests.
- Coordinate and/or support visit programs, side events, meetings, and logistics for Australian Government officials and high level visitors, as required
- Provide administrative and planning support as required including to ensure appropriate visibility of, participation in, and compliance with,UN and OSCE events, procedures, requests and other commitments.
- University degree in the field of international relations, politics, international security, law or a related discipline.
- Demonstrated research and analytical skills, including experience/ expertise in international relations; familiarity with the UN or OSCE advantageous but not required.
- Knowledge of Australia's international and foreign policy priorities, interests, and positions, and the ability to apply these in the context of technical and political processes.
- Well-developed negotiation and advocacy skills, including sound judgement, and a capacity to exercise discretion and confidentiality
- Highly developed interpersonal, representational and networking skills, including the ability to develop strong working relationships with a range of stakeholders.
- Strong written and oral communication skills in English.
- High level administrative and organisational skills, including the ability to manage competing priorities independently or with limited direction and meet deadlines
- Australian NV1 security clearance or ability to gain same.
- Please note that candidates who hold citizenship or dual citizenship of Austria are not eligible for an Australian Security Clearance.

A. Ability to independently conduct high-quality, thorough and accurate research from a variety of sources including data, analyse findings to monitor trends, and to present findings/reports to a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders in an appropriate manner.
B. A sound understanding of Australia’s international and foreign policy priorities and how they may be pursued in multilateral forums.
C. Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to develop effective stakeholder relations and to build and maintain mutually beneficial networks.
D. Effective judgment, decision-making and complex problem-solving skills, including a demonstrated ability to use initiative and innovation.
E. Well-developed planning and organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a client-focused environment to achieve positive outcomes.
