Job Purpose
The Associate Scientist, specialized in the upstream/downstream/logistic field, is expected to support the DS process development for new vaccines candidates from Ph I up to commercial launch. The successful candidate will report to the head of one scale up unit within the drug substance department in Belgium, which is part of the Technical R&D (TRD).

Job Purpose
The Associate Scientist, specialized in the upstream/downstream/logistic field, is expected to support the DS process development for new vaccines candidates from Ph I up to commercial launch. The successful candidate will report to the head of one scale up unit within the drug substance department in Belgium, which is part of the Technical R&D (TRD).
Key Responsibilities
- You will be expected to support autonomously the scale up part of drug substance development projects, contributing actively to implementation of latest industry trends and state of the art technologies into current manufacturing processes, identifying and promoting opportunities for improvements aiming for scalable, highly efficient, robust, and cost-effective manufacturing processes with reduced footprint.
- You will have a strong presence in the lab (>80%) and be able to interact with a team of technicians (<8 FTE) in a matrix structure (direct report to expert scientist as other technicians and/or operators) to ensure the coordination of daily activities (USP/DSP/Logistic).
- You will write experimental procedures and report the results in a comprehensive form as process history file and development reports after interpretation and extensive quality check of the raw data in collaboration with the expert scientist.
- You will ensure the availability of all documentation required to support the transfer in collaboration with the expert scientist.
- You will ensure the knowledge transfer for the receiving site (training, organization,…) in collaboration with the scientist/expert scientist.
- You will ensure a strong interface and knowledge sharing with all stakeholders (Drug Substance, Quality Control, Quality Assurance, Global Industrial Operations, Analytical Research Development, support services…).
- May train and oversee technicians on equipment operation, data analysis, and other project-related work.
- Act as a resource for colleagues with less experience.
Why you?
Basic Qualifications:
We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:- Master’s Degree in bio-engineering, biochemistry, biotechnology, chemistry or equivalent with at least 5 years of experience in upstream or purification of biological material, and/or manufacturing in biopharma/biotech industry.
- Experience in the scaling up of processes is a must (upstream/downstream:logistic part)
- Good level of spoken and written english
Preferred Qualifications:
If you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus:- Master’s Degree in bio-engineering, biochemistry, biotechnology, chemistry or equivalent with at least 5 years of experience in upstream or purification of biological material, and/or manufacturing in biopharma/biotech industry.
