Communication Intern


Department: Digital Citizenship Department (Dig Ci-Coms Trainee-2024-4)
European Schoolnet (EUN) is looking for one new communication trainee to join its
Digital Citizenship department in Brussels. The trainees will actively support the
communication activities of the department and will have the opportunity to support
the largest online safety project handled by the department on behalf of the European
Commission: the Better Internet for Kids (BIK) project.
The goal of the BIK initiative is to increase access to high-quality online content for
children and young people, step up awareness and empowerment, create a safe
environment for children online, and fight against child sexual abuse and child sexual
exploitation. Moreover, the project provides a coordination role to the European
Network of Safer Internet Centres.
Main tasks
This list is for indicative purposes only. It will be adapted to meet the priorities of the
organisation and in response to skills demonstrated by the trainee. Tasks will include:
  • Updating and maintaining websites.
  • Writing news and articles on projects and activities pertaining to digital
citizenship.
  • Managing the content of newsletters.
  • Updating and monitoring social media accounts, including Facebook, X
(formerly Twitter) and Linked In.

  • Planning and running communications campaigns.
  • Editing and producing promotional materials (posters, banners, videos, etc.).
  • Assisting the department’s project managers with associated events.
  • Attending project meetings with partners and other stakeholders.
  • Assisting with the production of project deliverables and reporting.
These roles will also contribute to an ongoing platform development project, including
supporting the migration of data in accordance with established style guides and search
engine optimisation (SEO)/accessibility best practices (guidance will be given).
Profile and skills
  • A bachelor’s or master’s degree in communications, journalism, media studies or
another relevant field.
  • Interest in digital citizenship or online safety and in communications as a career
path.
  • Very good spoken and written English plus at least one other EU language.
  • Attention to detail and being able to work independently.
  • A basic knowledge of HTML and previous experience with web content
management systems and other web publishing tools (ideally Drupal).
  • Interest and familiarity with corporate social media (Facebook, X (formerly
Twitter), Linked In, etc.) and new technologies.
  • Familiarity with graphical and video production as well as graphical design tools
is a plus (i.e. Adobe, GIMP, Canva).
  • Experience in writing news and articles, both for a specific and general target
audience.

  • Very good organisational skills, as success in the role also depends upon forward
planning, proactivity and meeting strict deadlines.
  • A team player with strong interpersonal and intercultural skills to succeed within
an international environment.
  • The person should have a first corporate experience (e.g. internship), other than
volunteering work.
Useful information
  • Duration of contract: 6 months’ internship starting from October 2024. This is a full-
time position.

  • Location: European Schoolnet, Rue de Treves, 61, Brussels, Belgium. The trainee
will have to be domiciled in Belgium during the traineeship.
  • Permit: Applicants must be EU citizens or already possess a valid work permit for
Belgium.
  • Benefits: a stipend of 1100 €/month net for the duration of the internship; hybrid
position: Remote working from the Belgian residence up to three days per week
allowed (Digital Citizenship department colleagues work from the office on
Mondays and Tuesdays); up to 10 days remote working from outside Belgium
during the internship.
Interview process
  • Selected candidates will have an interview via video conference with the head
of the Digital Citizenship Department, the Web Communication specialist, and
Human Resources, and will plan from the week of 23 September 2024.
