Decision support methods for distribution networks with telemetry data
(ref. BAP-2024-661)Laatst aangepast: 14/10/24
Electa-Ghent is part of Energy Ville, a collaboration between the Belgian research partners KU Leuven, VITO, imec and UHasselt in the fields of sustainable energy and intelligent energy systems. Spread across the different campuses of Electa and Energy Ville, tens of colleagues (Ph D students, postdocs, permanent research staff and lab engineers) work on a variety of related energy problems, making it a stimulating work environment.
The Ph D will be performed in the framework of the Arenberg doctoral school: https://set.kuleuven.be/phd . The position if full-time and fully-funded for four years, which is the nominal duration of a Ph D program at KU Leuven.
Project
Many of such tools require some degree of awareness with respect to the network’s operating conditions, which was not possible to obtain prior to the introduction of digital telemetry. Smart meters (and similar measurement devices) are becoming more widely adopted, but are still relatively sparse and present a number of non-ideal conditions: low signal-to-noise ratios, slow acquisition times, etc. In addition to that, multiple features of distribution networks (e.g., cable impedances) are not known accurately. The sub-optimal quality of measurements and network data brings challenges and uncertainties that propagate to the decision making process, and cannot be ignored in modern grid decision support tools. Thus, the goal of this doctoral project is to develop (sub-parts of) decision support solutions for DSOs that can address these challenges and the uncertainties they entail.
The candidate can start from existing software that has been developed in the Electa research group, and that is based on state-of-the-art mathematical optimization frameworks. The existing software can perform, among other, distribution system state estimation, phase connectivity identification, and cable impedance matrix estimation, but many more optimization and estimation challenges still exist. The candidate should be interested in modelling accurate mathematical models of complex decision and/or estimation problems, to solve with exact or heuristic methods depending on what is most appropriate.
As this position is not related to a specific project, the candidate has substantial academic freedom to shape their research according to their interest, along the lines described in this job advertisement, and in agreement with the supervisor.
Profile
You should have obtained excellent study results, and you should be keen on disseminating your research results by means of scientific publications, and/or conferences and talks.
Furthermore,
- Candidates should have a strong interest in energy, and prior background (education or professional experience) in power systems modeling/analysis is highly valued.
-
Experience with optimization and estimation methods - even outside energy-related problems - is highly valued.
- Good programming skills and experience with Matlab/Python/GAMS/Julia is a significant plus.
- Applicants should have good English communication skills.
- Prior research and publication experience is not expected but is a plus.
- You are a capable of working independently as well as in a team
The candidate should be willing to live in Belgium. The workplace is in the city of Gent, with the opportunity to collaborate with the Leuven campus and Energy Ville as well.
Offer
You will be part of a young and international team that addresses a broad range of research challenges related to the energy transition.
We offer:
-
A full-time and well-funded Ph D position with full social security
-
Multiple benefits (health insurance, laptop, funding to attend international conferences or schools, ...)
- The initial appointment is for 12 months, to be extended for subsequent years on the condition of positive evaluation by the doctoral commission
- A Ph D degree in Engineering at the end of the fourth year, if the candidate is successful
- A highly specialized doctoral training
-
An exciting work environment in a team with different skill sets working in projects for the industry and in public R&D projects with industry involvement.
- While not strictly required for the completion of this project, Energy Ville has state-of-the-art laboratory facilities, which the Ph D student may use, if meaningful.
Please note that the starting date is negotiable.
