What will Fern give you?
This is an exciting paid opportunity to gain strong work experience in an international not-for-profit co-managed organisation, learning how to manage finances and various donors’ requirements.
We offer a Belgian “Convention d’Immersion Professionnelle” Contract: €1040.40 monthly compensation for 6-9 months, as well as support with travel and expenses, a computer and a desk to work from at our Brussels office. There is potential to travel to Fern’s UK office if required. Fern will ensure you get an overview of all finance and HR areas. You will also get the opportunity to access mentoring from experienced professionals and receive support to get the most out of your time with us.

Description
Fern is a non-governmental organisation (NGO) created in 1995. Our mission is to achieve greater environmental and social justice, focusing on forests and forest peoples’ rights in the policies and practices of the European Union. We do this by coordinating NGO networks and by working with partners to achieve change.
We have no director and strive to make decisions by consensus.

We currently have 19 staff working from three offices, in Brussels (Belgium), Moreton-in-Marsh (United Kingdom (UK)), and Paris (France), and work with partner organisations across Europe, South-East Asia, Central and West Africa and South America. The partner organisations are in most cases small NGOs with varying financial and administrative capacities.
Introduction
As an intern with Fern, you will have the opportunity to support various finance and administrative processes, gaining hands-on experience in areas such as finance, organisational development, travel management, and HR procedures, while collaborating with international teams. This role will allow you to develop key skills in teamwork, communication, and project management.
Ideal candidates will have a strong interest in finance and operations, a passion for working in an NGO environment, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
You'll also gain valuable exposure to organisational development initiatives focusing on gender, the future of the EU, financial stability, and knowledge management.
Responsibilities & Tasks
  • Document Management: Organise and manage documents related to internal networks so as to ensure accessibility and timely updates.
  • Administrative Support: Assist the team with administrative processes and the creation of documents.
  • Logistical Support: assist Finance Admin Mentoring officer on logistics for events, drafting documents for gathering inputs and collecting feedback.
  • External Partner Coordination: Provide administrative support for tasks related to external implementing partners.
  • Financial Record-Keeping: Maintaining accurate and up-to-date financial records.
  • Collaboration: Working closely with the Finance Administration Manager and the Finance and HR Officer.
  • Budgeting and Reporting: Support the preparation of budgets and financial reports and audits.
  • Develop How-to Guidelines: Support the FAHRM team in communicating processes, budget updates, and donor requirements.
  • Input into the FAHRM Workplan: Join fortnightly meetings to discuss and plan key FAHRM activities and feed into our future workplan.
