What does a skeyes WAN Engineer do?

• As a key member of the IT network team within the IT Infrastructure department, you will be responsible for administering and managing our mission-critical Wide Area Network (WAN), which spans multiple data centers, regional airports, and our headquarters.
• Your primary focus will be ensuring the performance, availability, and security of WAN services, working closely with internal teams and external partners to maintain a robust and efficient network.
• In this role, you will manage the configuration, deployment, and integration of WAN services without altering the core architecture. Acting as the main point of contact with WAN partners, you’ll ensure seamless execution of service-related changes, proactively monitoring performance, and addressing any issues that arise.
• You will also be responsible for ensuring that WAN services meet security standards and comply with industry regulations, collaborating with the security team to integrate these services into the wider network.
• You’ll oversee service delivery from external WAN partners, ensuring that SLAs are met and serving as the internal escalation point for WAN-related incidents. Regularly reviewing service performance with external partners, you’ll identify opportunities for optimization, handle complex troubleshooting, and work to enhance the network's reliability and scalability.
• Additionally, you will provide Tier 3 technical support for WAN-related issues, working alongside internal teams to resolve incidents swiftly and effectively.
• Part of your role will involve ensuring that WAN services align with the organization’s broader IT strategy. This requires close collaboration with the Enterprise Architecture department, as well as other cross-functional teams including system engineering, application support, and technical departments like voice and radio communications, navigation, radar surveillance, and air traffic management.
• You will also be responsible for creating and maintaining network documentation, including configurations, topology diagrams, and operational procedures, while preparing regular performance reports and identifying areas for improvement.

• To be successful in this role, you will need at least 8 years of experience as a network engineer, with a minimum of 4 years focusing specifically on WAN in a large, mission-critical environment.
• Expertise in WAN technologies such as MPLS and VPN is essential, along with experience in working with monitoring tools like Nagios and managing external vendors or service providers.
• Certifications such as Cisco CCNA/CCNP, Juniper JNCIA-Junos/JNCIP-ENT, or Nokia NRS I/NRS II are highly desirable, and familiarity with ITIL and network security standards will be advantageous.
• You should have strong technical skills in routing protocols (BGP, OSPF, EIGRP) and be experienced in configuring Cisco, Juniper, or Nokia hardware. A solid understanding of VPN technologies, WAN acceleration, and high-availability concepts such as clustering and load-balancing is required.
• You will need to demonstrate excellent problem-solving skills, the ability to work independently or as part of a team, and the ability to manage your time effectively in a dynamic environment.
• Proficiency in English is required, along with fluency in either French or Dutch. A driver’s license is recommended, as occasional travel within Belgium to data canters and remote sites will be necessary.
• Participation in the outside business hours activity is also expected to ensure continuous WAN service availability.
