About the Position
The Cost Estimator will be responsible for preparing accurate and comprehensive cost estimates for residential construction projects. This role will collaborate with engineers and architects to determine the specifications of the project, requiring a keen attention to detail, strong analytical skills, and the ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment. The Cost Estimator will play a critical role in analyzing project specifications and preparing accurate cost estimates.
Key Responsibilities
- Cost Estimation: Utilize estimating software to prepare detailed construction estimates, ensuring accuracy and compliance with project requirements.
- Project Analysis: Analyze project plans and specifications to determine the overall cost, identifying potential risks and opportunities for cost savings.
- Resource Planning: Determine needed resources (manpower, equipment, and materials) from start to finish with attention to budgetary limitations.
- Bid Preparation: Create detailed proposals and bid packages for submission, ensuring all necessary documentation and cost information is included.
- Supplier and Subcontractor Coordination: Negotiate with suppliers and subcontractors to obtain competitive pricing and ensure the best value for materials and services.
- Tender Process: Prepare tender documents, manage tender packages, and follow up with trades during the tendering process to ensure timely bid submissions and resolve any queries.
- Tender Analysis: Prepare tender analysis based on submitted bids from trades, ensuring completeness and accuracy.
- Contract Negotiation: Prepare and negotiate revisions, changes, and additions to contractual agreements, ensuring all scope and contract changes are documented and approved.
- Cost Monitoring: Monitor and track project costs throughout the construction phase, providing regular updates and reports to senior management.
- Documentation: Maintain organized and thorough documentation of all cost estimates, proposals, contracts, and related activities for future reference and audit purposes.
- Market Analysis: Conduct market research to stay updated on industry trends, material costs, and labor rates, ensuring estimates are competitive and current.
- Reporting: Prepare and present detailed cost reports and analysis to senior management, highlighting any variances and recommending corrective actions.
- Compliance: Ensure all cost estimation practices comply with company policies and relevant regulations.
- Quality Control: Establish and implement policies and procedures for quality control in the estimation process.
- Budget Preparation: Assist in preparing project budgets, forecasts, and managing scope and contract changes to minimize risk.
- Progress Evaluation: Evaluate project progress and prepare detailed reports for senior management.
Qualifications
You’re a fit for the role of Cost Estimator if your background includes:
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a relevant field, with a minimum of 5 years of experience in Construction Estimating
- Proficiency in estimating software
- In-depth knowledgeable with Ontario Building Code
- Full understanding of construction technology, procedures, materials, and project management principles
- Extensive networks and resources of trades, contractors, and consultants
- Proven Experience in Contract Negotiation
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy
- Outstanding communication and negotiation skills
- Familiarity with Construction/Project Management Software
- Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
- Scheduling experience and analysis skills
- Ability to perform detailed cost analysis, control project costs, and prepare comprehensive reports
- Familiarity with quality, and health and safety standards
- Excellent problem-solving and organizational abilities
- Strong communication and written skills
- Ability to read, analyze and interpret technical design drawings
- Technical Background with Professional Accreditation
- PMP or equivalent certification is a plus
- Driver’s License Class G with own vehicle
Work Location
Hybrid or fully remote work setting in Canada. Candidates located in Ontario are highly preferred but not required.

Job Types: Part-time, Freelance
Pay: $35.00-$55.00 per hour
Expected hours: 5 – 10 per week
