Organizational Status
The Data Analyst reports directly to the Principal Investigator (PI) They will support the PI's leadership in the design, implementation, execution, and evaluation of research activities and deliverables. Additionally, the Data Analyst will work closely with other team members such as Project Coordinator, Research Coordinator, Research Assistants and others, both on-site and at collaborating sites.
Work Performed
- Provide senior leadership in the Mental Health Services and Systems Laboratory to plan, develop and advise on statistical methodology and research, as well as use expertise in research and statistical analysis to modify or adapt approaches across multiple fields of study (clinical, epidemiological, and health systems research projects)
- Develop and facilitate database development where needed as research projects evolve, and lead and conduct statistical analyses and modelling, including development of merged core datasets from E-mental health multi-sites trials, responses from World Health Organization (WHO) Surveys Initiative, research outputs from global health study collaborators and other projects involving big data.
- Facilitate statistical analysis and methodology learning for lab members, which includes providing group training and one-on-one mentorship to research assistants and trainees, explaining applications of new software and approaches, and interpreting data for stakeholders.
- Lead and coordinate data access and management of data files and systems, while maintaining a current knowledge of state-of-the-art systems and keeping abreast of emerging technologies, as well as ensuring the security and integrity of the datasets
- Conceptualize research questions, plan analysis and write research reports, manuscripts and grant applications.
- Oversee quality control of data sets and identify inconsistencies, including providing expert review of tables, figures and text accurately reflect the results of the analysis.
- Writing research proposals and scientific manuscripts.
- Perform other related duties as required.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
Accountability and responsibility of this position is high. The consequences of errors could include: lost data, compromised integrity of research, and success of research project.
Supervision Received
The incumbent will be supervised by the Principal Investigator. The Data Analyst will be expected to work closely with the PI and implement the PI's vision to achieve project goals, adequately balancing seeking direction from the PI on critical matters with self-direction and taking the initiative on day-to-day operations as a collaborative team member. Teamwork is the backbone of this work. This individual follows established policies, procedures and institutional standards of UBC.
Supervision Given
This position will give instructions and supervise technical work done by Research Assistants or other team members as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Post-graduate degree in Statistics. Minimum of three years of related experience in research analysis, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

- University graduate or post graduate degree in epidemiology, biostatistics or a related quantitative field is preferred.
- Experience working with administrative (facility-based, Pop Data BC, etc), clinical (RCT), and survey data
- Proficiency in quantitative research methods, study design and analysis; advanced knowledge of statistical programming packages such as R, STAT, SAS, etc. Ability to understand statistical foundations behind models
- Proficiency in Word, Power Point and Excel
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, including report writing and publication/presentation of research activities and results
- Experience handling confidential data with integrity and appropriate respect for privacy
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities and work effectively under pressure to meet short deadlines
- Thorough, accurate, and a high level of attention to detail
- Ability to work effectively independently and in a team environment
- Excellent interpersonal, time management, problem solving and organizational skills
- Proficiency with artificial intelligence methods an asset
- Applied and academic knowledge of mental health and addictions research and policy issues an asset
- Experience with digital tools, social media, web development, and e-mental health an asset
