Fuel Program Technologist

The CNL irradiated fuel inventory, comprised of a broad variety of unique research reactor fuel types and exotic experimental fuel assemblies, rivals the complexity of any other national fuel inventory. It also includes a large quantity of a unique waste forms, High-Enriched Uranium (HEU)-bearing Cemented Target Material (CTM), the disposal pathway of which must be identified and developed.
Fuel inventories are currently stored at multiple facilities across all CNL sites. Consolidation of these fuel inventories will enable the pre-conditioning required to meet disposal criteria. In addition this work will enable decommissioning and closure of these offsite locations.
More than 40,000 remote-handled packages of Intermediate- and High-Level Waste will be retrieved and conditioned over the next 40 years. Many of these waste packages will be severely degraded and contain pyrophoric material that will require processing and stabilization to permit safe storage, transportation, and disposal.
The Fuel Program Technologists primary role is the execution of field activities that include but are not limited to operating transfer flask, shipping flasks and interface equipment to ensure the safe recovery, handling and shipping of used fuel between CRL sites.
What will you be doing!
- Safely operate casks and flask
- Maintain production records and procedural documentation as required
- Maintain a clean safe workplace
- Preparation of operating or maintenance procedures as required
- Preparation of critical lift plans as required
- Preparation of Integrated Work Control (IWC) documentation as required
- Procurement of materials as required.
- Maintaining records as required
- Execution of maintenance procedures
- Other duties as assigned by your manager.

Education
- Graduation from a recognized institute of advanced technology, or equivalent formal education, in a field relevant to the position and normally has two to three years of pertinent technological experience. OR
- Secondary School Graduation Diploma or equivalent and normally has five to eight years of pertinent and progressive experience or the equivalent in experience, additional education and/or training.

Experience
- Experience manipulating flasks and/or shielded containers for radioactive material.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Demonstrated skill and dexterity in the handling of remote tools and equipment.
- Mechanical aptitude and demonstrated ability to troubleshoot equipment, develop improvements, and oversee implementation of those improvements.
- Good verbal communication and technical writing skills.
- Proven track record of successfully working as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
- Possession of a valid Ontario general driver’s license.
- Formal training and practical experience in the application of CNL’s Radiation Protection (RP) principles and hold Group 3 designation under the CNL Radiation Protection Program.
- Familiarity with CNL computer application programs (MSOffice).
- Must be able to obtain a Level 2 Security Clearance

Experience in spent fuel handling operations, in particular using remote tooling and cameras, flasks, and/or shielded facilities. Specific experience with equipment and tooling related to previous Repatriation operations would be an asset.
- Security Clearance Eligibility Required
- Level 2 Secret requires a minimum of 7 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States, and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat's “Standard on Security Screening” and the “Policy on Government Security.”

Working Conditions:
- Must be capable of working at heights.
- Be capable of working shift schedules when required, and work outdoors in all seasons.
- Routinely deploy to CNL offsite locations in Canada to support fuel conditioning and/or fuel retrieval work.
- Demonstrated skill and dexterity in the handling of remote tools and equipment.
- Flexible work schedule to respond to spontaneous project demands as they arise.
- Work environment requires wearing appropriate protective clothing and equipment where provided.
