Hydrovac Operator

Functional Role
As Hydrovac Operator you manage hydrovac trucks and equipment, performing non-destructive excavation around sensitive underground piping and cables. Responsibilities include equipment maintenance, site preparation, and ensuring safety compliance. You keep the unit organized and clean, maintain accurate driver’s inspection reports, and provide safe, professional and reliable service to our customers. You understand and implement personal and company safety measures by wearing personal protective equipment. You perform all work to regulated organizational, as well as provincial and federal standards and procedures and adhere to the highest standards of safety.

- Pre- and post-trip (fuel, fill/drain water tank), grease, clean cab

- Valid Class 1 or Class 3 BC drivers’ licence with air brake endorsement

- 2 years operating hydrovac equipment or similar machinery preferred
The Hydrovac Operator will demonstrate the following abilities in their daily work:
- Able to operate all equipment
- Familiar with size and weight restrictions
- Working knowledge of construction site safety, truck maintenance and road safety regulations
- Strong safety focus
- Ability to lead/oversee swamper
- Excellent oral communication
- Knowledge of but not limited to:
(ii) Fall protection
(iii) Electrical awareness
(iv) Equipotential bonding and grounding
(v) Confined spaces
(vi) Excavation safety
(vii) SDS
- Judgement and problem-solving skills
- Reliability, trustworthy
- Physically demanding:
(ii) Dexterity; eye/hand and eye/hand/foot coordination
(iii) Repetitive movements – body rotation, feet and hand controls
(iv) Gripping and reaching
(v) Requires bending, squatting, crawling and climbing
(vi) Requires the ability to lift, carry, push or pull medium weight up to 50 pounds
(vii) Climbing – stairs/ladders; getting in and out of equipment
(viii) Working outside in all different weather conditions, including extreme cold and heat
- Customer service skills including the ability to communicate effectively with the public
- Interpersonal skills including the ability to communicate effectively with other Coastal Mountain Excavations employees
- Other skills specific to the position
The Hydrovac Operator is accountable to the Operations Manager who may delegate authority.
Hours of Work
- Generally, 7:00am – 4:00pm, Monday – Friday
- Overtime required during busy construction periods
- $35.00 to $40.45 per hour - depending on experience
- Extended health and dental benefits after 180-day waiting period

Accountabilities
The Hydrovac Operator is responsible for the following:
- Be equipped with appropriate personal safety gear and always maintain:
(ii) hi-vis vest
(iii) steel toed boots/rubber boo
(iv) safety glasses/full face shield
(v) water resistant clothing
- Perform pre/post-trip inspection daily, including:
(ii) Physically check over the truck
(iii) Check the insurance is valid
(iv) Fuel the truck
(v) Fill/drain water tank
(vi) Ensure trip book is filled in
(vii) Truck should be clean, inside and out
(viii) Grease truck (weekly)
- Checks daily work schedule; if no Hydrovac work, alternate trucking work will be assigned
- Operates truck in a safe and legal manner, and performs basic maintenance
- All maintenance, other than that performed at the start and end of a shift, needs to be authorized by the Chief Mechanic
- If equipment is down for repair during your shift:
(ii) This is not deemed as personal time and you may be assigned alternative tasks – you are expected to perform work that moves the company forward, while on company time
(iii) If the repair is going to take a significant amount of time and there is no alternative work, your shift will end
(iv) Ensure you have clear instructions for your next shift at work, from your supervisor, before leaving the site
- Performs hazard assessments before any work begins
- Completes daily paperwork in an orderly, logical and legible fashion including all pertinent information
- Create and maintain operational documentation, on an ongoing basis
- Keeps dispatch informed of status regularly
- Ensures customer satisfaction by remaining courteous and friendly
- Always maintains personal foul weather gear (rain gear, rubber boots)
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $35.00-$40.45 per hour
Expected hours: 40 per week
Schedule:
- 8 hour shift
- Monday to Friday
