Mine Planning – Dewatering Engineer

About the role
We are offering a 4-month (January to April) Mine Planning - Dewatering internship based in Labrador City, Newfoundland and Labrador at our Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOC) operations. Relocation to Labrador City is required for this role. Accommodation and relocation assistance to Labrador City and return upon end of internship will be provided.
This internship will allow you to have direct exposure to mine engineering work on an active mine site. You will support different activities relating to IOC’s dewatering planning process.
In this role, you will be responsible for:
- Assisting dewatering and mine planners with developing and communicating short, medium and long range dewatering plans that are consistent with the dewatering strategy and 5 year dewatering plans
- Field visits to identify dewatering priorities, task planning and drill and blast issues
- Performing dewatering weekly reconciliation
- Supporting with pumping requirements, pump setups, sump and well designs
- Support with discharge pipe designs
- Support with environmental compliance and long range environmental permitting requirements
- Support with inventory management and future requirements
- Support with efforts to upgrade and purchase new equipment as required for Dewatering planned work
- Contributing to continuous improvements initiatives related to dewatering
- Coordinate maintenance of all dewatering equipment and updating through the asset management system
- Create/maintain accurate layouts of all mine dewatering infrastructure through Vulcan
- Participating in HSE related programs, including safety talks and field observations
- At least one year completed* in Hydrogeology, Hydrology, Civil Engineering, Geology or Mine Engineering related field

- Good communication skills and ability to work in a team
- Valid driving license
- To be eligible, you must return to school post internship.

We are a leading North American producer and exporter of premium iron ore pellets and high-grade concentrate with average iron grades greater than 66%. IOC’s operations include a mine with five operational pits, a concentrator and a pelletizing plant located near Labrador City in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. We also operate a wholly owned 418 km railway, the Quebec North Shore and Labrador Railway (QNS&L), that links our Labrador operations to Company-owned port facilities in Sept-Iles. This internship is based in Labrador City.
