systems of the future within electrical, thermal and mechatronic energy technology. AAU Energy has campuses in both Aalborg and Esbjerg, this position is located in Esbjerg.

The mission is to be world leading in both research and research-based education of the energy engineers of the future. AAU Energy has approx. 300 employees of many nationalities, of which 25 are administrative staff. In addition, AAU Energy constantly has approx. 50-70 guest researchers from around the world.

Research and teaching are in the absolute world elite in the field of energy, and we have extensive and leading workshop and laboratory facilities, where research and innovation are carried out in direct collaboration with industry to a great extent.

The position is offered in relation to the research program"Offshore Drones and Robots Research Group" and the Ph D Student will be positioned in the“Esbjerg section”.

This Ph D project centers on leveraging Deep Reinforcement Learning(DRL) to optimize microbial fermentation processes. The research aims to tackle critical challenges such as microbial variability, sterility maintenance, and fluctuations in oxygen and nutrient supplies, all of which are essential for ensuring consistent product quality. The project involves developing sophisticated deep learning models to build accurate simulators and designing DRL algorithms for effective process control. The candidate will be responsible for data collection, preprocessing, and analysis, as well as training and validating models, and designing and optimizing DRL policies. This research serves as a bridge between AI and industrial biotechnology, promising significant contributions to both fields and enhancing scalability from laboratory settings to large-scale production.

The project is a collaboration with Unibio, a pioneering biotechnology company that converts carbon-rich gases into Uni Protein, a sustainable and nutritious protein solution. Unibio operates in Kalundborg, Denmark, where it has established the world's first commercial U-Loop fermentation production facility. The U-Loop technology utilizes methane to create a consistent and cost-efficient protein product used in animal feed, aquaculture, and pet food.
Additionally, the project involves Helix Lab, a research and education center in Kalundborg funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation, which provides MSc students opportunities to conduct industry-linked thesis
projects. Lastly with the Department of Engineering Cybernetics at NTNU, a leading research and education center focused on the automatic control of dynamic systems, also collaborates on this project.

The applicant must provide and upload a proper project description, which describes the applicants initial thoughts and ideas related to the specific project applied for. This includes a brief state-of-the-art(including short list of references), a time schedule and how the applicant intends to shed light on the project objectives. The project description should have a length of 4-5 pages.

We are seeking a highly motivated Ph D candidate focused on leveraging Deep Reinforcement Learning(DRL) to enhance microbial fermentation processes. Responsibilities include developing and training advanced deep learning models and designing DRL algorithms for process control. Strong background in machine learning, deep learning, programming(Python), and experience with DRL are required. The ideal candidate should also know about time series modeling, language models(LMs), large language models(LLMs), control systems focused on DRL, optimization, data collection, sensing, and data analysis. The position offers a unique opportunity to work at the intersection of AI and industrial biotechnology,
providing significant research contributions with practical applications.

Salary and Career:
When pursuing a Ph D at Aalborg University, you'll receive a stipend which includes both salary and pension benefits. The base salary starts at a minimum of 28,993.42 DKK before taxes, with an additional 17% added for pension contributions. However, the final salary can be negotiated based on your qualifications and experience, with seniority playing a key role in determining the main salary.

Ph D stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master's degree. Ph D stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a Ph D student at the Doctoral School of Engineering and Science in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of August 27, 2013 on the Ph D Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the Ph D student shall be assessed at regular points in time.

Shortlisting will be applied. This means that subsequent to the deadline for applications the head of department supported by the chair of the assessment committee will select candidates for assessment. All applicants will be informed whether they will be assessed or not.

Appointment and salary as a Ph D fellow are according to the Ministry of Finance Circular of 15 December 2021 on the Collective Agreement for Academics in Denmark, Appendix 5, regarding Ph D fellows, and with the current Circular of 11 December 2019 on the employment structure at Danish universities.
