PhD Stipend in Reinforcement Learning for Planetary Space Robotics

At the Technical Faculty of IT and Design, Department of Electronic Systems, a Ph D stipend in AI and space robotics is available within the general study programme Electrical and Electronic Engineering. The stipend is open for appointment from October 1, 2024, or soon as possible thereafter. In electronic engineering, Aalborg University is known worldwide for its high academic quality and societal impact. The Department of Electronic Systems employs more than 200 people, of which about 90 are Ph D students, and about 40 % of all employees are internationals. In total, it has more than 600 students in its BSc and MSc programs, which are based on AAU's problem-based learning model. The department leverages its unique research infrastructure and lab facilities to conduct world-leading fundamental and applied research within communication, networks, control systems, AI, sound, cyber security, and robotics. The department plays an active role in transferring inventions and results into applications in close collaboration with industrial partners worldwide. Jobbeskrivelse
AI for robot autonomy is expected to be a key component in the future of space exploration and achieving a permanent human presence on the moon and Mars. Advanced space robot systems often cannot be tele-operated in real-time due to the significant time delays between Earth and the moon/Mars, which poses a substantial challenge. The primary difficulties in ensuring higher uptime and safe operations of these autonomous systems revolve around developing algorithms that can function reliably in the harsh and unpredictable conditions of space. This project aims to investigate these challenges by leveraging reinforcement learning and advanced physics-based robot simulation techniques to enhance the autonomy and efficiency of space robotics.
The goal of this project is to address research and design challenges that include(but are not limited to):
  • Develop advanced 3D physics simulation of planetary robotics such as space rovers and robot arms: Creating high-fidelity simulations that accurately mimic the physical interactions and environmental conditions of space to test and validate robotic systems before deployment.
  • Implement reinforcement learning algorithms for space robotic applications: Designing and applying model-free reinforcement learning algorithms that enable robots to learn and adapt to new tasks and environments autonomously, without the need for real-time human intervention.
Prototyping and demonstration of the developed solutions on a space rover testbed: Building and testing prototypes of the proposed solutions on physical space rover platforms to ensure practical viability and robustness in real-world conditions.
Prospective applicants to this Ph D proposal should have the following qualifications:
  • Sc. degree in robotics.
  • Experience with space robotics or related fields.
  • Solid coding skills in Python.
  • Implementation experience and knowledge of model-free Reinforcement Learning.
  • Strong experience with ROS/ROS2, Docker, and git.
  • Strong experience with Nvidia Isaac Sim and integration with robotics.
  • Hands-on experience with robot hardware and integration in the lab.
  • A creative mindset and curiosity to research and hand-on developments
The successful candidate will be hosted by the Advanced Robotics& AI group, which specializes in pioneering research in autonomous space robotics, particularly for planetary exploration and related tasks. Our mission is to develop cutting-edge algorithms and systems that enables robots to function autonomously in harsh and unpredictable environments, such as those found on the surfaces of other planetary bodies.
Our research focuses on:
  • Increasing the autonomy of intelligent robotics for space exploration and resource utilization
  • Developing AI systems for off-Earth manufacturing and process optimization
  • Advancing swarm robotics for multi-robot cooperation to enhance coverage and applications

Ph D stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master's degree. Ph D stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a Ph D student at the Technical Doctoral School of IT and Design in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of August 27, 2013 on the Ph D Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the Ph D student shall be assessed at regular points in time.

Shortlisting will be applied. This means that subsequent to the deadline for applications the head of department supported by the chair of the assessment committee will select candidates for assessment. All applicants will be informed whether they will be assessed or not.

Løn og ansættelsesvilkår
Appointment and salary as a Ph D fellow are according to the Ministry of Finance Circular of 15 December 2021 on the Collective Agreement for Academics in Denmark, Appendix 5, regarding Ph D fellows, and with the current Circular of 11 December 2019 on the employment structure at Danish universities.
