Shafting and Propulsion Lead

Amentum is actively seeking a Shafting and Propulsion Lead for International Fleet Support under the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) PMS 326 Follow-On Technical Support (FOTS) contract. The work location will be at the Egyptian Naval Base in the port of Alexandria, Egypt. This position includes a competitive benefits package.
Essential responsibilities and daily duties include:

Lead teams during propulsion system installation, alignment, or maintenance procedures.

Conduct regular inspections of the propulsion system, identifying issues related to wear, misalignment, or mechanical failures.

Diagnose issues within the shafting and propulsion system, whether mechanical or alignment related.

Execute shaft pulling operations for inspection, repair, or replacement.
-
Communicate effectively with engineers, shipbuilders, technicians, and project managers.
-
Resolve issues during operation or maintenance in shipyards, at sea, or during dry-docking.
-
Provide detailed and technically accurate written condition and open and inspection reports. Use technical publications to identify and order required repair parts.

Participate as a member of the Amentum Ship Repair Team (SRT) in close coordination with the Industrial Manager.

Provide timely and comprehensive inputs for the Monthly Status Report.
Minimum Requirements
-
High School Diploma or GED.
-
5+ years of experience working with marine shafting and propulsion systems, including design, installation, and maintenance.
-
Certification in propulsion systems or marine machinery design.
-
Experience in the operation and troubleshooting of the propulsion systems (e.g., gas turbines, diesel engines, or electric propulsion).
-
Expertise in the installation, operation, and maintenance of turning gears, used for slow rotation of the main propulsion shaft during inspections, alignment, or maintenance.

Experience with stern tube alignment and the process of stern tube bearing wear measurement and replacement.
-
Proficiency in fitting and maintaining shaft sleeves, which protect the shaft from wear, particularly at points where it passes through bearings or seals.

Strong experience in shaft alignment techniques, including the use of laser alignment tools and optical devices to ensure proper shaft line alignment, minimizing wear on bearings and enhancing efficiency.

Knowledge of alignment tolerances and standards, and the ability to adjust to compensate for deflection, vibration, and other alignment issues.

Ability to conduct vibration analysis and dynamic balancing.

Ability to conduct regular inspections of the propulsion system, identifying issues related to wear, misalignment, or mechanical failures.

Strong problem-solving skills to resolve issues during operation or maintenance in shipyards, at sea, or during dry-docking.

Proficiency with hand tools, precision measurement tools, and equipment to perform repairs and have a thorough knowledge of standard shipyard practices.

Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.
-
Ability to interpret vessel blueprints and ship drawings in addition to research ships’ systems manuals to identify problems as they arise.

Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
-
Ability to obtain a Country Clearance and Base Pass authorization.
-
Ability to possess a current passport at least two years before expiration after arrival in Egypt.

Ability to travel CONUS and OCONUS.
Preferred Qualifications
-
Prior ship maintenance experience or working knowledge of expectations and safety protocols related to a shipyard environment.

Experience working in an Arab country for long periods.
