Åbo Akademi University offers a postdoctoral position as a project researcher in the Academy of Finland financed project Who will defend democracy? The elite-mass linkage in attitudes towards democratic principles. The project examines support for democratic principles and practices among politicians. It relies on cross-sectional and panel survey data from Finland and established democracies to conduct extensive empirical analyses that focus on studying the conditions under which politicians may be willing to engage in undemocratic behavior. The position is fixed-term for the time 1.11.2024-31.8.2028. The starting date is negotiable. We are looking for a researcher with expertise in survey research, including survey experiments, and in the study of political attitudes.
RESEARCH ENVIRONMENT
The project is hosted by the Social Science Research Institute (Samforsk) at Åbo Akademi University (ÅAU). Samforsk is an independent research institute at ÅAU. With its approximately 15 academic staff members, Samforsk seamlessly collaborates with the department for political science and public administration. Together, these units form a cluster of about 40 academics in Turku and Vasa. Nationally, Samforsk is a leading institution for the study of public opinion and attitude formation. It hosts Firipo, the first research infrastructure dedicated to the empirical study of public opinion in Finland. Financed by the Academy of Finland since 2020, Firipo is on the national roadmap for research infrastructures. Internationally, Samforsk is known both for being a pioneer in the empirical study of deliberative democracy and for being an important center for the study of public opinion. Samforsk has collaboration agreements with Stanford University (US), Uppsala University (Sweden) and close partnerships with the University of Gothenburg (Sweden) and the universities of Turku and Tampere in Finland. The researcher is expected to participate in and contribute to this dynamic academic environment.
DESCRIPTION OF THE POSITION
The work tasks are comprised primarily of research within the project, both independently and as part of the research team. The project researcher will plan surveys and survey experiments together with the research team, running the surveys and experiments as well as analyzing the data. Additionally, the researcher will actively participate in authoring articles. The work tasks also include other duties relating to the research project and other activities within the research environment at Samforsk.
The researcher will be a member of a collaborative research team and the position is located in Turku. The researcher is required to work a total of 1612 hours per year. The work tasks are defined in detail in an annual work plan.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EVALUATION
In accordance with the Personnel Regulations of ÅAU, a project researcher is required to hold a Doctor's degree in a relevant field. As a rule, the time elapsed since taking the Doctor's degree should not exceed four years (a copy of the diploma of a doctoral degree should be submitted in the application).
When assessing the applicant's qualifications for the position, the following criteria will be taken into consideration:
Scientific competence (80%), including achieved academic merits, scholarly publications in relevant topics and expertise in survey methodology, experimental methods and data analysis.
Interactive competence (20%) including good collaborative skills, merits in project management and societal outreach.
We especially invite applicants with experience in survey data analysis and experimental methods. The successful candidate will be appointed based on an overall assessment of the applicants' capabilities to carry out the work duties included in the position. Strong English skills are required. Additionally, as Swedish is the language of teaching and administration at Åbo Akademi University, knowledge of Swedish is regarded as an asset.
The applicants can be invited to an interview. A trial period of six months applies to all new employees.
SALARY
The project researcher's salary is based on Level 5 of the job demand levels for teaching and research staff. In addition, an individual salary component based on personal work performance is added to the salary.
