Vaisala
Research Scientist
Helsinki
November 1, 2024
Vaisala is a global leader in measurement instruments and intelligence helping industries, nations, people, and the planet to thrive. From predicting hurricanes to optimizing renewable energy production, our technology is used where it matters the most – from data centers, windfarms and laboratories to airports, the Arctic and even the surface of Mars. Our team of over 2,300 experts and 59 nationalities around the world is committed to taking every measure for the planet. Driven by our shared purpose, curiosity, and pioneering spirit, we stay ahead and make a difference. At Vaisala, you don't have to fit in to belong.
Why join us?
- Develop and innovate cutting-edge miniaturized, low-power measurement solutions to meet the evolving demands of weather sensing.
- Gain unique insight into industrial development with opportunities for growth tailored to your strengths and ambitions.
- Work alongside top scientists to develop world-class measurement devices, ensuring that our instruments meet the highest quality standards in the industry.
- Leading performance, not location. Our culture is trust-based. We treasure face-to-face collaboration with our colleagues, but hybrid work and flexibility are the new norm for us.
In this role, you will contribute to sensor development, focusing on future innovative solutions for measurement instruments being small-in-size, free of maintenance, and having low power consumption. In this role, you will develop technologies that allow sensor miniaturization, lowering power consumption, to measure the most challenging weather phenomena. This requires you to also network with external communities, adapt the academy and industry development trends to your projects, and use strong communication and project management skills. You will report to Science Team Lead. You will be part of our Weather Research and Technology team of experts, that work on both applied technology research projects as well as product development, covering a broad variety of environmental measurement technologies and weather parameters.
Your responsibilities include:
- Bringing insights as to how to either develop completely new miniaturized weather technologies, or alternatively how to holistically derive a smaller-size and lower-power implementation of an existing technology, including alternative powering solutions and data communication.
- Work as a part of productization teams and contribute to product creation through scientist tasks such as design, lab work, testing, and creating science-based material for customers.
- Conduct applied research studies to evaluate new technologies, including building learning prototypes and proof of concept demos, field deployment, and linking business needs with potential new solutions.
- Conduct data analysis to resolve issues and enhance product performance.
- Document research-related outcomes through project reports, white papers, and articles. As technical expert, provide recommendation for next steps.
- MSc (Tech.) or Ph D degree in measurement technologies, (low power) electronics, (small size) sensors, physics, environmental science, metrology or equivalent discipline.
- 3-5 years of experience working in measurement device development or research including hands-on sensor prototyping.
- Demonstrated capability to develop miniature proprietary sensors, or use existing commercial sensors, to build winning products for weather/environmental applications, or for similar fields, such as medical or wearable sensors.
- Strong understanding of various measurement technologies, both hardware and software. You understand how devices work and can select the best solution for cost-efficiency and performance.
- Experience in programming languages, such as Matlab or Python, enabling data analysis and algorithm development.
- Understanding of the methods and procedures for conducting applied scientific research targeting product development.
Ready to take every measure for the planet? Apply at the latest on November 17th, 2024 via the application form.
