Position Summary
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Clinical Research Fellow to manage a study on Precision Endo-Omics to develop next-generation medical imaging using advanced endoscopic technologies integrated with gut multi-omics profiling and artificial intelligence (AI) for precision diagnosis, outcome prediction and personalised therapy in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and colon cancer. The aim is to integrate research across discipline boundaries, thus stimulating innovation and accelerating research towards sustainable benefits and value for health and society.
Precision Endo-Omics will benefit from state-of-the-art infrastructure, access to several advanced imaging technology platforms and clinical and research spaces. The Clinical Research fellow will have clinical and a research base at the Mercy and Cork University Hospitals as well as the APC.
The candidate will be responsible for coordinating and overseeing funded research project, which focuses on precision Endo-Omics pioneered by Prof Iacucci. The position will be based at Cork University Hospital and will require close collaboration with the Gastroenterologists at Mercy University Hospital, APC and Tyndall Institute. The post combines clinical IBD with scientific research. You will be able to work in a well-functioning multidisciplinary team environment and receive exposure to complex IBD management, advanced imaging (endocytoscope, confocal laser endomicroscopy and Artificial Intelligence) clinical and translational research and ability to network with leaders in IBD nationally and internationally.
This approach emphasises a holistic and collaborative effort at national and international levels, integrating concepts
(and experts) from advanced gut imaging, genomics, microbes and metagenomics, digital spatial and single cell profiling, biophotonics and artificial intelligence.

Responsibilities:
  • Manage and oversee the research study on `inflammatory Bowel Disease and Colitis associated Cancer including study design, patient recruitment, data collection, and analysis.
  • Collaborate with PI and gastroenterologists, APC Microbiome Ireland, Tyndall Institute and develop and implement research protocols and provide expertise; Collaborate with International centres while being posted at UCC.
  • Work closely with APC research scientists involved in research program to ensure seamless coordination and execution of the research study.
  • Assess eligible patients, discuss the rationale of the study, goals, multi-omics, and explain the importance of personalized diagnosis and treatment to participants.
  • Contribute to the development of future expertise in Ireland in immune-mediated and cancer diseases aligned to relevant speciality areas, with a focus on improving health outcomes.
  • Publish research findings in relevant scientific journals and contribute to the dissemination of research outcomes to the wider medical community and general public and patients. It is expected that the successful candidate will aim to complete a higher degree and seek an academic career.
Requirements:
  • Medical degree and specialization in Gastroenterology, with a thorough understanding of chronic inflammatory conditions such as IBD and cancer.
  • Irish Medical Council Registration and Membership of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland (MRCPI) or equivalent.
  • Clinical Research Fellows need to be in a relevant specialist training program and preferably completed at least Basic Specialist Training before entering the research training program.
  • Experience in clinical research, including study design, data collection, analysis, and publication.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to effectively liaise with the Consultants, scientists, and operations team engaged in the Precision Endo Omics.
  • Nearing completion of clinical training, with a strong track record of publications in relevant fields.
  • Ability to assess and manage patients at a trainee level and provide expert advice on the rationale of the research study and personalized treatment approaches.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to coordinate research activities and ensure timely completion of project milestones.
  • Passion for improving health outcomes and contributing to the advancement of immune-mediated research in Ireland.
