Job Description
Duration:
Temporary externally funded non Grant-in-Aid contract post, the indicative duration of which is 10 months, subject to contract. A panel may be formed from which future similar vacancies may be filled; such a panel will remain active for a maximum period of 12 months.
Basic Function:
The basic functions of this post are to conduct sampling, analysis and reporting on soil and water samples in Irish agricultural landscapes. The role will involve sampling and analysis of water and sediment from drainage ditches and collaborating with project partners in Teagasc and DCU. The Technologist will work with project partners to develop indicators of nutrient mobilisation from agricultural drainage ditches, in tandem with the deployment of passive sensing devices developed in the project.

Background:
SENSUS is a funded research programme led by Teagasc with project partners in DCU. The position is based at Teagasc Johnstown Castle, however, a number of farm visits with participating farmers and pilot sites will form part of the duties and responsibilities. The research will focus on sample collection of water and sediment from participating farms and the development of indicators of nutrient mobilisation and decision support for water quality protection. Statistical analysis of existing farm data in GIS and development decision support for water quality mitigation will be a feature of this project.
The research Technologist will working in collaboration with research and technical staff at Environment Soils and Land Use Department, Johnstown Castle, Wexford. The successful candidate will gain insight and experience into a variety of areas including the processes of project and budgetary management, data analysis, sampling handling and reporting of results for dissemination and publication.
Job Objectives
  • Engage with Teagasc researchers in monitoring water quality across a number of existing sites and participating farms.
  • Survey and sample water and sediment at case-study sites.
  • Compile database and conduct preliminary and statistical analysis of data.
  • Review literature and preliminary farm data.
  • Continue to monitor water quality at on-farm locations that coincide with mitigation measures and monitor effectiveness for water quality protection.
  • Write scientific articles and dissemination material for knowledge transfer and outreach.
  • To assist Teagasc in meeting the commitments of the Quality Customer Service Charter and Action Plan.
  • To actively participate in the annual business planning and Performance Management Development System (PMDS) processes.
  • Fully co-operate with the provisions made for ensuring the health, safety and welfare of themselves, fellow staff and non-Teagasc staff and co-operate with management in enabling Teagasc to comply with legal obligations. This includes full compliance with the responsibilities outlined in the Safety Statement.
  • Any other duties as may be assigned from time to time.

Qualifications

  • A Level 8 qualification (as recognised on the National Framework of Qualifications or equivalent), in science, environmental science, agricultural science, engineering, applied sciences or related discipline.


  • A postgraduate degree and/or research experience in environmental science, agricultural science, or related science subject would be a distinct advantage.


Skills

  • Experience in field and laboratory skills, sampling and handling of environmental samples, report writing and data analysis.
  • Proven record of scientific communications.
  • Aptitude for multidisciplinary approaches.



Knowledge

  • Technical and expert knowledge in water quality.
  • Knowledge and familiarity with GIS.

  • As this role will involve field work and driving vehicles, candidates must satisfy and continue to satisfy during employment with Teagasc, legal requirements to drive a car unaccompanied on Irish public roads.

Eligibility
This is an open public competition. Should a current serving Teagasc staff member be successful in their application through open public competition for this post, their current contract of employment with Teagasc will come to an end on taking up this post.
