Fermoy

Job Description
Temporary externally funded non Grant-in-Aid contract post, the indicative duration of which is 25 months, subject to contract. A panel may be formed from which future similar vacancies may be filled; such a panel will remain active for a maximum period of 12 months.
Basic Function:
The position will be based at Teagasc, Animal and Grassland Research and Innovation centre, Moorepark, Fermoy, Co. Cork. Teagasc Moorepark is Ireland’s leading dairy research institute with national responsibility for all aspects of dairy production research which include grassland and grazing management, dairy cow breeding and reproduction, dairy cow health and welfare, milk composition and dairy cow nutrition, milking technology and milk production systems plus economic analysis. The research programme is conducted by over 30 scientific and technical professionals, supported by administrative and operative staff. Moorepark operates a total of 7 individual dairy research farms totalling 500 hectares and over 1,000 dairy cows. Facilitates include modern individual cow feed and metabolism units, laboratories, computer facilities and milking research laboratories.
Background:
The reliance of Irish livestock production of grazed and conserved pasture is the highest in Europe. This ensures that the Irish production system is unparalleled regarding its competiveness and sustainability. The required reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from Ireland is 51% by 2030 relative to 2018 across society, with an emissions reduction target for agriculture of 25%. The incorporation of additional novel plant species in predominantly perennial ryegrass pastures represents a major opportunity to increase animal performance and reduce environmental impacts is Irish pasture-based grazing systems. White and red clovers have attributes supporting reduced nitrogen use, improved digestion efficiencies and reduced methane loss that are not being fully exploited by grassland farms. Such legumes have many advantages to fix Nitrogen (N) in the soil across the year. The supply of plant available N in the soil from mineralisation and biological N fixation needs to be better quantified, and the factors influencing its supply identified. The successful candidate will work in collaboration with a number of Teagasc colleagues in the Grassland Science Department and external partners and stakeholders. This would will also be part of the pasture modelling team at Moorepark to enhance the Nitrogen sub-model in the Mo St grass growth model and Ireland national grassland database, Pasturebase Ireland.
