The successful candidate, in tandem with the National Scrum Coach, will be responsible for implementation of the National Scrum programme and the identification and development of front row forwards throughout the Provincial and National performance pathways.
The position is being offered on a full-time, 2 year fixed-term contract basis. The role will be based at our High Performance Centre, Sport Ireland Campus, Snugborough Road, Blanchardstown, Dublin 15.

POST TITLE: Performance Pathway Scrum Coach, IRFU
Based at the IRFU High Performance Centre Blanchardstown.
ROLE AND PURPOSE OF POSITION:
Working in tandem with the National Scrum Coach this position will be responsible for implementation of the National Scrum programme and the identification and development of front row forwards throughout the Provincial and National performance pathways. The Performance Pathway Scrum Coach is a full-time employee of the Irish Rugby Football Union

KEY COMPETENCIES:
Leadership
Ability to lead and realise the Provincial and National vision as outlined in the Rugby In Ireland (Strategic Plan 2024 – 2028).
To align and achieve coherence across the performance pathway to deliver the national scrum programme, that is in the best interests of the long-term development of identified players.
Rugby
Experience and a proven track record of achievement in developing players, front row forwards and forwards for the elite representative game at National age grade, URC, European and International levels.
Credible set-piece (scrum) and rugby knowledge, understanding and expertise gained from playing, coaching or through player management. Ability to coach the scrum, position-specific and unit, through all National age-grade levels and into the professional game.
Interpersonal Skills
Ability to build relationships and interface effectively with people at all levels of the performance pathway. Competence to motivate, develop relationships, and if required manage conflict.
Adapt to multiple environments and settings, delivering appropriate coaching to players at different stages of the performance pathway.
A problem solving and solution focused outlook.
Management Skills
Ability to plan, communicate, research and constantly evaluate current practices to achieve excellence.
Ability to work independently, while maintaining consistent communications with relevant stakeholders.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Oversee the strategies and long-term national objectives of the National scrum performance pathway programme with specific responsibility for: Front Rows (technical, tactical & physical competencies), National age-grade teams (scrum), Front row succession planning documents, Positional transfers to the front row
Ensure delivery of agreed service level provision with the National Scrum Coach, for all aspects of the National scrum programme across the performance pathways.
Manage the development and progression of front row players for the professional game in Ireland to National age grade, URC, European and International levels.
Work alongside an integrated service team to ensure best service provision for identified players within the National Scrum Programme.
Regular interface with the Senior coaches, Academy Managers and Pathway staff to ensure full alignment on all aspects of the National Scrum Programme.
Ensure accurate monitoring and up-to-date data is provided into designated IRFU software platforms (Kitman) for all players within the National Scrum programme, as directed by the National Scrum Coach.
Manage the alignment of the Scrum programme to the Provincial & National Age Grade Teams
PERFORMANCE MEASURES:
Quantity and quality of front row players developed for National age grade, Senior Provincial and National teams to enable them to compete at the top levels of the game.
Delivery of agreed service provision to all elements of the Scrum programme.
Design and delivery of (quarterly) reports, on identified players within the National Scrum Programme.
Establish strong co-operative working relationship with Schools and Clubs to ensure full engagement with the National Scrum Programme.
Work in cooperation with the National Scrum Coach and the Head of Elite Player Development to ensure the quality of front rows in the performance pathways are of the requisite standard.
National Scrum Curriculum – based on the players profile and individual performance plans, provide specific interventions to ensure continued personal development for front row forwards.

Extensive weekend/unsociable hours
High levels of domestic and international travel
Weekly Provincial visits
Additional KPI’s will be set & agreed on an annual basis
