About the organisation
St Patrick's Mental Health Services (SPMHS) is Ireland's largest independent, not-for-profit mental health service. We are dedicated to providing the highest quality mental healthcare, to promoting mental health awareness, and to advocating for the rights of those experiencing mental health difficulties.
We offer a multidisciplinary inpatient service through our three approved centres: St Patrick’s University Hospital; St Patrick's Hospital Lucan; and Willow Grove Adolescent Unit. The role
Pharmacy Porter
0.5WTE Part time, Permanent Contract
(Job share)
The Pharmacy Porter will provide a delivery and collection service for the SPMHS Pharmacy Department and support pharmacy personnel in the receipt of wholesaler deliveries and other dispensary tasks.
The Pharmacy Porter will report to the Chief Pharmacist (day to day) and Administration Manager (professionally).
Each job-sharing Pharmacy Porter will work a 39-hour fortnight, alternating a three day and a two-day week to ensure support is provided for 39 hours per week. Appointees to the post are expected to cross-cover leave. See ‘Terms and Conditions’ below for full information.

St Patrick’s Mental Health Services, James’s Street, Dublin 8, incorporating St Patrick’s Lucan, Willow Grove Adolescent Unit, the Dean Clinics, and other services operated by St Patrick’s Mental Health Services.
Responsibilities
The duties of the Pharmacy Porter are outlined below. In carrying out all duties, the attendant should ensure all Hospital procedures, Health and Safety policies and legislative requirements are carried out at all times.
- Delivering medication and non-drug orders to wards and departments as and when required
- Collecting medicines from wards as and when required
- Responding to bleeps and addressing issues promptly
- Collecting post and other deliveries on behalf of the pharmacy department
- Transporting medication to other approved centres as necessary including St Patrick’s Lucan
- Unpacking wholesaler orders for scanning and check in
- Filling nutritional supplement fluids orders under the supervision of pharmacy staff
- Managing recycling within the pharmacy department
- Carrying out all other duties relevant to the position

Required qualifications and/or experience:
- A full, clean driver’s license and own transport
- Experience working in a hospital (desirable)
- Experience in delivering medication (desirable)

- Confidential in their approach and have excellent communication skills
- Ability to work on own initiative

Terms and Conditions
Tenure: Permanent, part-time, job share, pensionable.
Working Week: Each job-sharing Pharmacy Porter will work a 39-hour fortnight, alternating a three day and a two-day week to ensure support is provided for 39 hours per week. Appointees to the post are expected to cross-cover leave as designated by the Chief Pharmacist. When cross-covering, each Pharmacy Attendant may work up to 39 hours per week or 78 hours per fortnight and will be paid accordingly.
Salary: The salary for the position is based on the SPMHS Porter 2024 pay scale (€34,074 – €37,70o) pro rata and is commensurate with experience.
Annual Leave: The annual leave associated with the position calculated at 8% of all hours worked.
Pension: All pensionable staff become members of the pension scheme after successful completion of probation. The scheme is a defined contribution scheme with a deduction from the salary of the employee of 4%. In respect of an internal appointment being made, the individual’s existing pension arrangements will continue.
Probation: The appointee will be appointed in a probationary capacity for the first six months during which time the job holder’s performance will be subject to ongoing review.
Any extension to or suspension of the period of probation will be in line with the European Union (Transparent and Predictable Working Conditions) 2022.
Health: The appointee must be fully competent and capable of undertaking the duties attached to the position and be in a state of health such as would indicate a reasonable prospect of ability to render regular and efficient service.
Character: The appointee must be of good character.
Retirement Age: Normal retirement age for employees is 66 years which at present is also normal pension age.
