Purpose and Scope of the Job
Plans, directs, administers and supervises activities for patients. Reports to the Medical Director on matters relating to the operation of the patient care division and maintain contact with the Head of Department.
Main Duties and Responsibilities/Performance Standards

Ensures implementation of the Ministry of Health regulations, the Hospital Medical Staff Bylaws, Rules and Regulations and the Department Policy and Guidelines.

Diagnosis and treatment of patients referred to department and responsible to run his own clinic.

Performs all surgical procedures according to the clinical privileges granted to him.
4
Examines, diagnoses, and treats diseases and injuries of musculoskeletal system by surgical and conservative means and application of corrective mechanical devices.

Prepares and reviews case histories and obtains data through interviews.

Examines patients and determines x-ray examinations and clinical laboratory tests required. Interprets test results and evaluates examination findings.

Determines procedures for preoperative and postoperative care such as administering sedatives, prescribing diets, and preparing operative area of patients

Applies surgical procedures and coordinates operation with anesthesiologist.

Reduces and immobilizes fractures by open or closed methods, using such corrective devices as braces, casts, and splints.

Administers and prescribes such conservative measures of treatment as antibiotics, drugs, and compresses.

Treats patients suffering from surgical shock, post operative hemorrhage, and other complications.

Manages orthopedic surgery services. Formulates plans and procedures for orthopedic surgery services. Schedules operations and assigns surgeons, nurses, and medical technicians.

Directs nurses in procedures for preoperative and postoperative care and operating room techniques

Coordinates orthopedic surgery services with other medical activities.

Maintains the highest professional standard of documentation in line with policies and procedures and internationally accepted standards.

The Consultant will review outpatient’s summaries and shall prepare reports and statistical analysis as required of him; such reports will be prepared in a timely manner in accordance with the standards within the Department.

Keeps current with new procedures and techniques in the field of his specialty.

Required to be involved in the departmental Performance Improvement activities

Participates in providing education and support for all junior staff in the department and supports continuing medical education, providing teaching materials as part of the professional development of the staff.

Has a responsibility to report any occurrence not consistent with the operation of the Clinic or standard of service for patients, employees or visitors and situations which put patients, staff and visitors at risk of injury or other harm.

Provides leadership for organizational performance improvement activities. Participates in committee membership.

Maintains strictest confidentiality.

Co-ordinates and exercises overall professional control over the activities of Medical Registrars for ensuring that sound administrative and professional standards of medical practice are maintained.

Provides overall responsibility for all medical in-patients, out patients and emergencies. Conducts regular ward rounds on all patients.

Answers calls from the wards regarding conditions related to care given to the patient.

Accepts all other additional assignments found necessary by the Head of Department.
Qualifications, Competences and Skills
Royal College/Fellowship/Membership
Minimum 3 years post Phd /Fellowship/Membership experience in relevant specialty
Well versed in English and Arabic

Good communication skills

Knowledge of Required Organizational practices /patient safety standards.

Command over professional code of ethics , medical bylaws
4
Knowledge of evidence based Age specific/ Population specific patient care clinical guidelines accepted by the hospital
5
Culturally competent ( Kuwaiti patients’ culture and beliefs)
6
AHA certified Basic Life support provider
