World Animal Protection US

Campaign Organizer - Contract Role

New York

CONTRACT

September 18, 2024

World Animal Protection is a global organization working to end factory farming and wildlife exploitation. We expose cruel systems, promote animal-friendly alternatives, and influence policy change. For over 70 years, we’ve been rewriting the story for animals.
Working across almost 50 countries with offices in 12, we prioritize animals in farming and wild animals exploited for use in entertainment, as pets, and in fashion.
Position Overview
Seeking a skilled local campaign organizer with strong connections to animal rights, shelter, and rescue communities across New York City’s five boroughs. Experience engaging and influencing city council officials and securing legislation sponsors is a plus.
In coordination with our US campaigns team, the Organizer, New York City, will build relationships and identify opportunities to collaborate with stakeholders in New York City to advance a city council bill banning the sale of animals in brick-and-mortar pet stores. This will include, but is not limited to, local animal rights groups, local environmental and wildlife protection groups, local shelter and rescue groups, and elected members of New York City Council. The role will also pursue opportunities to engage the general voting public via political mobilizations and tabling, leafletting, or other educational engagements at public events across the city.
Main Responsibilities
  • Outreach and lobbying key New York City Council in support of the bill to ban the sale of animals in retail pet stores in the city.
  • Organizing rescue, animal rights, and conservation groups to lobby City Council in support of the bill to ban the sale of animals in retail pet stores in the city.
  • Maintaining standing meetings and regular communications with key partners, including Voters for Animals Right, and keeping allies informed of progress, opportunities to take supportive action, and mobilization activities.
  • Identifying and executing voter mobilization and community awareness initiatives around the need for a ban on the sale of animals in retail pet stores.
Requirements
  • Strong connections to local NYC advocacy and grassroots groups, in particular groups focused on animal, conservation, and local economic issues.
  • Demonstrated experience connecting with NY City Council members and their staff to advance specific issues and build support for a local bill.
  • Commitment to advancing diversity, equity, inclusion, accessibility, and belonging (DEIAB) and creating spaces that enable diverse voices and perspectives.
  • Experience leading and facilitating meetings with decision makers and other influential stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated success working in a flexible, remote working environment.
  • Available to travel around New York City extensively.
  • Ability to multi-task, problem solve, and prioritize projects, with a proven track record of managing multiple projects that deliver desired outcomes.
  • A strong attention to detail.

Qualified candidates will also bring:
  • Familiarity with one or more of the following industries or sectors: animal rescue, small animal breeders, and/or pet store operations.
  • A passion for protecting animals and commitment to our organization’s values.
  • Strong desire to bring fun and creativity to all aspects of your work.
  • Experience in project management and delivering against measurable benchmarks.
  • Team player with ability to develop and maintain good working relationships across internal departments and teams.
We understand some people may not apply for jobs unless they tick every box. If you're passionate about joining us and think you have much of what we're looking for, even if you're not 100% sure… we'd love to hear from you.

Benefits
This is an hourly, part time, contractor (1099) role for a period of 18 months with an expected commitment of 10 hrs per week. Pay rate is $40/hour. Possibility for extension beyond 18 months if additional funding is granted.
