Job description
Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) is one of Europe's leading research universities. The Eindhoven area, in the southern part of the Netherlands, is one of Europe's top 'innovation ecosystems', with many high-tech companies and institutes. TU/e is intertwined with many of these companies and institutes, and research at TU/e is characterized by a combination of academic excellence, industrial relevance and societal interweaving.Eindhoven University of Technology is a community of scientists, supporting staff, students and partners. People are the heart and soul of TU/e, so it is of great importance to safeguard the distinctive Eindhoven atmosphere, creating a personal, welcoming and vibrant environment that enables individuals and groups to grow professionally and personally.
The department Chemical Engineering and Chemistry is one of the nine departments of Eindhoven University of Technology. It was established in 1957, shortly after the university was founded. The department is located in the Helix and Matrix buildings on the TU/e campus.
Sustainable Process Engineering (SPE)
The Partnership Sustainable Process Engineering consists of the four groups Chemical Reactor Engineering headed by Prof.dr.ir. John van der Schaaf, the group on biomass processing of Dr. Neira d’Angelo, the group Energy Intensified Chemical Reaction Engineering of Prof. Dr. Evgeny Rebrov and the Inorganic Membranes & Membrane Reactors group of Prof.dr.Eng. Fausto Gallucci. The SPE partnership consists of 3 Professors, 2 UDs, (all acting as PIs), 15 postdocs, more than 55 Ph D students and 7 support staff.
The group's mission is to be among the world's top academic research groups in its field and to be leading in the development of novel technologies for new, highly efficient, inherently safe, and robust (micro)structured multiphase processing systems, which show the best productivity by a dedicated design of all relevant dimensions and optimum choice of dedicated operational procedures.
Research in the Van der Schaaf group focuses on the development of catalytic and non-catalytic multiphase reactors that use rotation to create high gravity and high shear conditions. These conditions lead to excellent interphase mass transfer, intra-phase mixing, and fluid-to-wall heat transfer. The research focuses on characterizing and increasing the performance of high-gravity high-shear equipment as a function of design, operating conditions, and fluid properties. Applications have been demonstrated in e.g. oxidations, hydrogenations, electrochemical reactions, in separation processes such as distillation, stripping, extraction, crystallization, and as heat exchangers. The group collaborates with major industrial parties both national and international.
Research in the Rebrov group is related to the development of structured multiphase catalytic reactors, in particular hydrogenation reactors for fine chemical synthesis and their scale-up to capacities of 50 kg per day and beyond. The research focuses on the optimization of the regular microscopic structure of the reactor internals, to maximize process selectivity and the radial convective heat transfer rate. Furthermore, the deployment of alternative energy sources, e.g. plasma, inductive heating, or microwaves, in such structured reactors are investigated.
Research in the Gallucci group is related to the development of membranes and novel multiphase reactors, in particular membrane reactors and dynamically operated reactors. The research focuses on the interaction of heterogeneous catalysis, transport phenomena, and fluid mechanics in these novel multifunctional reactors. The SIR chair coordinates and participates in several large European Projects and works in strict collaborations with several industrial partners.
Research in the Neira D’Angelo group is dedicated to the integrated development of novel catalysts, high-performance reactors and process intensification strategies to address relevant challenges in the much needed transition towards renewable feedstocks (e.g., second-generation biomass) and energy sources (e.g., electricity from solar or wind energy) for a future energy and resource efficient chemical industry. This group focuses on structured catalytic reactors, multi-functional reactors and electrocatalytic reactors for biomass valorization.
