Technician - Hubrecht institute - Utrecht

Utrecht

FULL TIME

October 8, 2024

Location: Utrecht
Max hours per week: 38.00
Max salary: 3.771
Duration of agreement: 13 months
Apply until: 10/25/2024

The group of Dr. Catherine Robin currently has a vacancy for a technician full time (38 hours/week) to work on the topic of hematopoietic stem cell generation and regulation.

Lab topics:
The Robin lab studies the cellular and molecular mechanisms that lead to the production and expansion of hematopoietic stem cells during embryonic development, both in vitro and in vivo. Hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) are self-renewing multipotent cells that produce all blood cell types during the entire life of an individual. One major challenge in the field of stem cell research is to generate large quantities of these very rare cells in vitro for research and clinical use (i.e. to treat patients with blood related diseases upon HSC transplantation). The lab investigates different aspects of HSC production during embryonic development, i.e. their spatial and temporal origin, the regulation of HSC generation and expansion, the composition and function of the different microenvironments supporting HSC production, and the cellular and molecular signature of HSCs and precursors. Various cellular/molecular techniques, in vitro and in vivo models (including zebrafish and mouse), are used for this research.
We are looking for a highly motivated and hard-working starting technician who will be involved in every aspect of laboratory work, from conducting experiments with researchers/students to lab management and organization. The candidate needs to have a strong background in molecular biology and/or cellular biology. The candidate should be passionate about biology and be motivated to work in an ambitious, multidisciplinary and international research team. The working language in our team is English, the candidate should therefore have excellent English communication skills.

As a technician in the lab, you will:
  • Conduct and support scientific investigations and experiments, in assisting students and researchers in their research projects.
  • Required to work with and handling animals (i.e., zebrafish).
  • Order and maintain stock and resources, and coordinate documentation for results and protocols.

We are looking for:
  • An enthusiastic and honest technician, organized and detail oriented, who can multitask.
  • A person with analytical and time management skills.
  • A person able to work independently and in team.

Requirements:
  • Degree in cellular biology, molecular biology or relevant field.
  • Experience with working with zebrafish embryos (Art.9 or 14, not mandatory).
  • Experience in operating laboratory equipment, in classical lab techniques (e.g. cell culture, molecular biology) and handling animals under supervision (i.e. fish).
  • Working knowledge of MS Office.
  • Good written and oral communication skills (both in Dutch and English; mandatory).

Duration:
13 months with the possibility of an extension (if funding available).

Terms of employment
Depending on education and experience the minimum salary is €2.793 and the maximum salary is €3.771 gross per month for a full-time appointment (scale 7 cao Nederlandse Universiteiten/KNAW). This is exclusive of 8% vacation allowance, 8.3% year-end bonus, travel allowance, internet allowance, home working allowance and pension accrual with ABP.
The KNAW offers its staff an excellent package of secondary benefits. A package that meets the different needs of employees depending on their stage of life, lifestyle or career ambitions. For example, by working an extra two hours a week, it is possible to increase the number of days off from 29 to 41 days a year (with full-time employment).
For a complete overview of the terms of employment, please refer to the web page: werken bij de KNAW.
Applying for a Certificate of Good Conduct can be part of the employment procedure.
