About this role | Mō tēnei tūranga
This is a part-time (0.8FTE) fixed term position until June 2025.
The Advisor on Deaf Children (Ao DC) provides support to families, whānau and educators to achieve desired outcomes for babies and children who are deaf or hard of hearing. The focus of the Ao DC support is early years, birth to Year 3 at school.
Our Advisors on Deaf Children provide specialist support to babies and children who are deaf or hard of hearing, to their parents/caregivers, and to families and whānau. This support is in accordance with the goals, objectives and policies of the Ministry of Education.
Our Advisors on Deaf Children also provide specialist support which:
- Has an early years focus (birth to Year 3 at school)
- Is family and whānau centred
- Uses a routine and strength based approach based on priorities identified by parents/caregivers, families and whānau.
- Support children with their fitting of specialist equipment to support their hearing and training of key people around the child.
Salary range: $69,996 - $118,450 per annum + 3% kiwi saver. The successful candidate will be appointed at a salary which reflects individual skills and experience.

About you | Mōhou ake
To be successful in the role of Advisor on Deaf Children, you will have the following experience:
- Experience in deaf education
- Experience in a complex organisation
- Experience in building relationships and partnerships to achieve shared outcomes.
- An understanding and applied practice of the principles and strands of Te Whāriki: Early childhood curriculum and Te Whāriki a te Kōhanga Reo, as well as the key competencies and learning areas of the New Zealand Curriculum and Te Marautanga
- You will also have the following essential qualifications and capabilities:
- A Master of Specialist Teaching (Adviser on Deaf Children, or Deaf and Hard of Hearing) or a Postgraduate Diploma in Specialist Teaching (Deaf and Hard of Hearing), or equivalent
- Applicants who do not have either of the required qualifications are required to complete the Master of Specialist Teaching (Adviser on Deaf Children, or Deaf and Hard of Hearing) within four years following appointment to an Advisor on Deaf Children position.
- A teacher of the deaf qualification or speech language therapist qualification or equivalent qualification with at least two years’ experience in that role
- The ability and willingness to adhere to the Public Service Standards of Integrity and Conduct.
About our group and team | Mātau rōpū ake
Te Mahau takiwā collectively provide leadership and integrated services to the education sector. This includes services such as learning support and education advice and regulation functions for schools and early learning services.
As a frontline group we develop and harness existing relationships with communities at the regional and local level through the Directors of Education, including deep relationships with iwi and hapū.
