Describe We are seeking motivated Lead Advisor’s to join our English Medium Workforce Supply team within our new Education Workforce Supply & Leadership Group.

We are looking for an Advisor on Deaf Children to be part of a close-knit, whānau-based and community-focused team.

Rotorua is an hour from Tauranga/Mount Maunganui, an hour from Taupō, and an hour from Hamilton.

As an Advisor on Deaf Children, you will play a critical role in our region’s Learning Support team by:

  • Providing specialist support to babies and children who are deaf or hard of hearing, and their whānau.
  • Providing professional support and guidance to early learning services, schools, teachers and whānau and building their capacity to support the learning of these babies and children.
  • Providing appropriate specialist intervention plans.
  • Working as part of a collaborative team where a child’s needs are complex.
  • Liaising and working collaboratively with other services in the community such as Ko Taku Reo, audiology, and the Cochlear Implant Team

Salary range: $69,666 -$118,450 per annum + 3% kiwi saver. The successful candidate will be appointed at a salary which reflects individual skills and experience.

This role is based at our Rotorua Office, however, we could also consider the role being based in our Taupō Office as it covers Rotorua, Murupara, Taupō and Tūrangi. Travel will be required.

Applicants who live in the surrounding South Waikato or wider Bay of Plenty areas and are willing to commute may also be interested in this role.

About you | Mōhou ake

The ability to understand and apply the principles of Te Tirirti o Waitangi and tangata whenuatanga, including promoting tikanga and te reo Māori is essential.

To be successful in this role, you will need to have the following capabilities and competencies:

  • a Master of Specialist Teaching (Adviser on Deaf Children, or Deaf and Hard of Hearing) or a Postgraduate Diploma in Specialist Teaching (Deaf and Hard of Hearing), or equivalent
  • OR: Teacher of the deaf qualifications (postgraduate diploma or equivalent)
  • OR: Speech language therapy qualifications (master’s or bachelor’s degree in Speech Language Therapy, or equivalent)
  • AND: be willing to undertake the master’s programme of study for Adviser on Deaf Children/Deaf and Hard of Hearing

The following would support your application:

  • knowledge and experience in the development, education and audiological management of tamariki who are deaf or hard of hearing
  • experience and knowledge of New Zealand Sign Language and a commitment to ongoing learning of New Zealand Sign Language
  • experience in and willingness to work collaboratively and support other education professionals and agencies
  • excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with children, young people and their whānau, and professionals, across a range of settings
  • The ability and willingness to adhere to the Public Service Standards of Integrity and Conduct.

A full current driver licence is essential as travel across the region is a requirement of this role.

Learning Support is a critical part of the Te Mahau | Te Tai Whenua (Central) Group in the Ministry. We are charged with leading the education sector in ensuring that children and young people with additional learning needs are supported to achieve their full potential through education.

Our Learning Support specialists work closely with families, whānau, caregivers, schools and early childhood educators in English and Māori medium settings and other agencies to help maximise learning outcomes and promote social inclusion.
