Associate Director, Global Engagement (International
Relations)


Position Purpose: The Associate Director, Global Engagement (International Relations) will
support the delivery of the University Globalisation Framework –
particularly as it relates to international relations. The role will work to
expand and enhance Massey’s engagement of and support from
international communities, global indigenous networks and institutional
partners. This will be completed in conjunction with our colleges,
research areas and relevant professional units, as well as all parts of the
Office of the DVC Students and Global Engagement to build and maintain
internal and external relationships that strengthen Massey’s international
reputation and engagement.

The Associate Director will lead the international relations team to
support college-specific globalisation plans under Massey’s Globalisation
Framework which supports the University Strategy. The role will support
growth in global research partnerships and disseminate opportunities for
global knowledge exchange. The Associate Director will serve as the
university’s main point of contact and organiser for both incoming and
outgoing international delegations and visitors.

About this area The Office of Global Engagement (OGE) is often considered the gateway
to the University for our international students and stakeholders, in that
they support the University’s international activities, as well as provide
strategic advice on global engagement efforts. They are the first point of
contact for international students, education agencies, articulation and
mobility partners, and visitors to the University (including those from
our Diplomatic Corps).

The OGE also helps students in New Zealand to set themselves up for a
global career with study abroad or exchange programmes, as well as
managing collaborative agreements that typically bring the world to
Massey.

with key individuals and institutions both within New Zealand
and across foreign universities, government agencies,
diplomatic missions, industry, aid and partnership networks.

across the University, working closely with Global Engagement
portfolio colleagues, International Admissions, International
Student Support, Alumni and Colleges / Schools / Departments.

o Provide strategic advice to the DVC Students and Global Engagement and Executive Director, Global Engagement on
relevant international higher education initiatives and the
impact of these initiatives on the university.

o In conjunction with Executive Director, Global Engagement,
advance the development of a tiered structure of strategic
university partners with the aim to drive activity and resources
to a defined set of partners in different regions of the world.

o Manage the international partnership process for collaborative
agreements.

o Negotiate, draft and peer review collaborative agreements,
contracts for services and other legal documentation,
establishing terms and conditions with international partners.

o Support colleges and service units with opportunities for
research and consultancy engagement.

o Ensure all internal and external international reporting
requirements relevant to international partnerships are met.

  • Strategic Outbound International Engagement
o Lead the planning and organisation of strategic overseas missions by the Vice Chancellor and DVC Students and Global
Engagement.

o Lead events with potential to build Massey’s profile and
reputation offshore, which may include Alumni events, cohort
recruitment events, partner anniversary and President’s
Forums, International Conferences and Symposia.

o Provide support for strategic overseas missions to other senior
University leaders as appropriate and to the extent resources
allow.

o Liaise with university partners, senior New Zealand government
officials and agencies and education representatives offshore to
ensure awareness of and support for Massey’s strategic
relationship building.

o Effect timely pre and post meeting communication with
participants to ensure that relationships are fostered
appropriately and to the benefit of the University and that
anticipated outcomes are progressed.

o Advise staff on appropriate protocols when undertaking
diplomatic activities.

  • Host senior international delegation visits to the university
o Working together with Academic Champions and Colleges to ensure strategically focused visit programmes are organised,
with requisite leadership and academic unit support provided,
in a timely manner.

o Work in close collaboration with NZ Government Agencies such
as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Ministry for
Primary Industries, New Zealand Trade and Enterprise, Ministry
for Business Innovation and Employment and Education New
Zealand who make requests for senior international delegation
visits to Massey on a regular basis.



Qualifications and Experience
Qualifications: A relevant tertiary qualification is required (International relations or law
preferred), with postgraduate qualification an advantage


Experience:
  • Competency in, or a desire and willingness to undertake professional
development in, Te Reo Māori, Tikanga and Te Tiriti principles.
  • Minimum 7 years’ experience successfully managing and executing
global engagement activities preferably within a large tertiary
education organisation.
  • Experience working with various international markets.
  • Knowledge of contracts and partnership agreements and
negotiations.
  • Proven success in collaborative ways of working.

In addition, this position requires a reasonable amount of national and
international travel and therefore it is expected that the successful
candidate will be willing and available to travel. This may include travel
time during weekends/evenings, and although it will not automatically
attract time off in lieu (as this is factored into the salary), the line
manager will work with the team to ensure there is adequate recovery
times.
