Auckland War Memorial Museum: Connecting through sharing stories of people, lands and seas
Auckland Museum is a much-loved culture and heritage organisation at the heart of Auckland's identity, committed to outstanding management of its world-class collections, developing and sharing engaging content through its galleries, exhibition, events, educational programmes and the permanent and volunteer staff who tell the Museum's stories. We are Auckland's home of commemoration as well as the country’s oldest research institution and a major tourist destination.
Job Description
The Director of Audience Engagement at Auckland Museum holds a pivotal, executive position responsible for shaping and enhancing how the Museum connects with its diverse audiences. In alignment with Museum’s ‘Path to 2029’ strategic direction, this role provides strategic oversight and operational leadership of the Audience Engagement portfolio, ensuring integrated, world-class programming that reaches on-site, off-site, and online audiences. The successful candidate will play a key role in leading the delivery of exceptional public experiences that are audience-led, culturally rich, and internationally competitive.
The role encompasses responsibility across five critical areas: public programmes and events, learning and education initiatives, touring exhibitions and gallery displays, digital experiences, and marketing. This role drives innovation and collaboration, working across teams and with external stakeholders to provide educational, immersive, and inspiring experiences. In partnership with internal and external contributors, the Director of Audience Engagement leads the Museum’s educational, immersive, and inspiring experiences to enrich Auckland’s cultural landscape, under the korowai of Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
Desired Skills and Experience
- Strategic Vision and Leadership: Demonstrated experience in an executive or senior leadership role within cultural, educational, or visitor-focused organisations. You bring a track record of successfully developing and implementing audience-centred strategies that enhance public engagement.
- Audience-Centric Programme Development: Expertise in developing, delivering, and evolving programmes across physical and digital platforms to meet diverse audience needs, with a strong commitment to educational outreach, community engagement, and inclusivity.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Proven ability to work collaboratively within and across organisations, fostering teamwork and innovation among cross-disciplinary teams. You excel in building partnerships with external stakeholders to achieve shared goals.
- Innovative Digital Leadership Expertise: Strong background in digital engagement strategies and content development, with skills in market research and targeted marketing to expand audience reach and relevance.
- Operational Excellence: Skilled in managing complex projects and operational plans across multiple functions, with an understanding of the logistical and production requirements of public programmes, touring exhibitions, revenue generation and events.
- This is a unique opportunity to make a meaningful impact on Auckland Museum’s journey to being a leader in public engagement. We are seeking a passionate and visionary leader who is eager to elevate the Museum’s role as a cultural and educational hub for Auckland and beyond.
